There have been several remasters over the years when the movies arrived on DVD and then Blu-ray and now 4K so they’ve been in great shape. The Rise of Skywalker 4K disc showcases the vast amount of colours and shades as the story moves from the forest Rebel Base to the bright desert of Pasaana, the dark streets of Kijimi and the mysterious world of Exegol. Showcase scenes: The opening shot of Star Wars with the large starship rumbling overhead never looked or sounded better. Secondly the bit rate (the number of bits to provide the video and audio quality) is much higher off a disc than a streaming service. With excellent native 4K video with Dolby Vision, and solid accompanying Atmos, as well as a comprehensive selection of extra features as part of a lavish boxset, Total Recall 4K is an absolutely unmissable release of a stone cold sci-fi action classic, and an utter joy to revisit.

Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Limited Edition Complete Box

We did notice the films looked a lot more natural on 4K when compared with the Blu-rays which tended to be warmer with a more reddish tinge to the image.

Star Wars 4K Video

The UHD disc reviewed comes as part of the ‘Skywalker Saga’ set which is a lavish box set and included is a collector’s book, that houses all the discs (careful as you remove them!), two Blu-rays, one with the film, the other loaded with extras and a letter from Mark Hamill himself. The UHD has no extras itself. Colours are rich, vivid and bold, and graded with perfection, lasers are a good shade of red, light sabres glow, flesh tones remain natural, while the greens of the Death Star lasers are punchy. Of course, we do have to contend with the recolouring given to the last Blu-ray, so while the purple of the sunset over Tatooine, with Luke looking into the distance as the music swells might be gorgeous, it is still the wrong colour ….

It’s the first time we’ve see the Prequel Trilogy on 4K and look impressive but despite being made more recently they don’t match the amazing quality of the Original Trilogy. David Lean’s undisputed king of the epics, Lawrence of Arabia, may be mostly fantasy in terms of its titular character and his actions, but the film is completely magnificent – running at 3 hours 48 minutes the length is a positive boon to the narrative; allowing scenes to unfold naturally, giving a true sense of scale to the picture. The whole is epic in every sense of the word; locations, sets, acting talent, design and story – we are unlikely to ever see its like again. With all that in mind here’s our take on the best scenes in the Star Wars films that will make you appreciate the quality you can enjoy from the 4K disc. But what was also amazing was how much the HDR improved the image and showed off shapes and objects in the shadows we normally would have missed. Blu-ray (top) v 4K

2. Back to the Future

Firstly, they offer a repeatable high quality experience regardless of the speed of your internet connection. Star Wars was shot using a combination of Arriflex 35-III, Panavision PSR R-200, Panavision Panaflex X and Panavision Panaflex cameras on 35mm film, and has been newly scanned with 4K resolution for this release. It should be noted that the latest ‘Special Edition edit’ has been the source for this scan, it therefore contains much of the colouring inherent to that release. The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the widescreen 2.39:1 aspect ratio, and uses 10-bit video depth, High Dynamic Range, and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec for HDR10. We reviewed the Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Star Wars on a Panasonic 65DX902B Ultra HD 4K TV with a Panasonic DMP-UB400 Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

Flash Gordon has no right to be so damn good; on paper it is a combination of some of the worst dialogue, storytelling, acting, casting, and producing, and yet somehow, unbelievably - fused to the most inappropriately appropriate score for any mainstream movie - it just works. It's an absolute hoot, laugh out loud funny (often for all the wrong reasons) and hugely, hugely entertaining.

The 4K disc of The Last Jedi is newly authored—it no longer includes Dolby Vision HDR (per Disney’s new norm). All of the Blu-rays in the set are newly-authored discs—they are not the same as those released previously. The Last Jedi movie Blu-ray now includes the Score-only version of the film and its Bonus Blu-ray now includes the Meet the Porgs retail exclusive featurette. Most (but not quite all) of the previous Blu-ray special features are included in this set. Most of the previous DVD special features are not included—and of course, the original unaltered theatrical cuts of Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi are not included.

Also on 4K UHD for the first time is Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens along with Rogue One which is set just before the original 1977 Star Wars film in the story’s timeline. High Dynamic Range (HDR) is also better off the disc so the clarity and contrast in the darker and lighter areas of the picture are even more detailed and defined.Deleted/Extended Scenes – Excised scene titled: Tosche Station, Old Woman on Tatooine, Aunt Beru's Blue Milk, The Search for R2-D2, Cantina Rough-Cut, Stormtrooper Search, Darth Vader Widens the Search, and Alternate Biggs and Luke Reunion. HDR also adds so much to the movie and offers great contrast to still appreciate the 4K detail even in the shadows and in brighter areas of the picture that would otherwise be washed out.
