Capture wide landscapes and group photos one moment, then tight portraits, family sporting events and smooth HD video the next—all with phenomenal clarity and precision. While pressing this button, you also have to rotate the zoom ring, which unlocks the lens, gets it to the 18mm focal length mark, and extends the total length of the lens by some 30mm.

Similar to other AF-P lenses, the 18-55mm AF-P handles all this exceptionally well: NIKON D5300 + 18-55mm f/3. m (2 ft) and remove lens hoods to prevent vignetting (shadows created where the end of the lens obscures the built-in flash). It has only the very slightest green-magenta fringing in the corners at the wide end on a D200 or other older camera.The number of tests depends on the individual product but we are confident in this product having tested all the major functions.

It is the only basic zoom with a constant (and fast) aperture – so this lens might be very appealing to sport/action photographers. The 52mm filter thread does not rotate, which should make this lens ideal for use with graduated filters and polarisers. The problem is that the new AF-P autofocus motor system only works on camera models originally introduced since about 2013. Similar to my experience with the DX 70-300mm AF-P telephoto zoom, my real-life shooting experience shows that this lens focuses silently, accurately, and reliably.Other brands are softer, and no other 18-55mm offers autofocus anywhere near this fast or has instant manual-focus override. The most difficult thing for a zoom to do well is to be sharp at its tele setting wide-open, and here the 18-55mm AFP is wonderfully sharp. Vignetting should not be a major concern in this lens class, as even professional lenses display some degree of vignetting. Photographing shy insects is not recommended with this lens, as 55mm is too short, and you have to be just a few centimeters away from your subject, which may frighten it and make it move away.
