CoolStance® does not contain any husk or shell. It is made from the white meat of the coconut. High fibre (20%) comes from the flesh of the coconut. Provide fresh, clean water away from the CoolStance feeder to ensure the horses leave the feed trough. This should be done for all feeds, as it will slow down the rate of eating and assist digestion. It starts with the enlargement of the pituitary gland at the base of the brain – either through a benign tumour or hypertrophy through over activity which then starts a cascade of hormonal events throughout the body. The pituitary gland is a master controlling gland that sends out hormones to other glands in the body to keep metabolic and endocrine systems working properly. Most of the clinical signs of this condition are related to excess hormone from the pituitary gland affecting the adrenal glands near the kidney.

Depending on your soil, grass and hay profile, Cool Stance® needs to be fed with a balanced mineral and vitamin supplement. Most soils are too depleted to provide horses with adequate minerals and vitamins. We recommend Medicine Bag Complete as a valuable choice. CoolStance Copra meal contains 8-10% oil as coconut oil, and only 11% NSC which makes it a unique feed for horses. Coconut oil is very different from many of the other vegetable oils commonly fed to horses. Coconut oil is highly saturated, which makes it very stable (ie. not prone to rancidity). Coconut oil also has a high content of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA), which provide a ready source of non glucose energy for exercise. Coconut oil is also rich in the fatty acid "lauric acid" which possess antibacterial, antifungal and antiprotozoal properties. This may be of benefit to immune function. CoolStance® does not contain any husk or shell. It is made from the white meat of the coconut. High fibre (20%) comes from the flesh of the coconut. How does CoolStance® supply energy?A second possibility is that the feed has a zinc-to copper ratio imbalance, which hay can’t correct. Some copra meal may be high in copper, but low in zinc. The ideal ratio of zinc to copper should be between 3:5 and 5:1, but some copra may have as low as 2:2. Like the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, the appropriate zinc-to-copper ratio is vital for proper development of young horses. This mineral imbalance can be corrected by taking a vitamin or mineral supplement, particularly one that is high in zinc. If it’s quality copra meal, regularly tested for aflatoxin (a mycotoxin that commonly contaminates copra meal) and not burnt during the drying/oil extraction process then it is great stuff. Provide fresh, clean water. A good way to think about water is to ask yourself “would I drink this?”. It has a lovely oil content which interestingly has virtually no omega 3 or 6, so it won’t unbalance your omega ratios. It is also predominantly medium chain fatty acids which are unique and have some advantages over long chain fatty acids for digestion and metabolism. The oils in other meals such as soybean and canola contain mainly Long Chain Fatty Acids (LCFA), which are polyunsaturated. This means they are digested slowly, and are prone to rancidity during storage. Some commercialised oils are made using GMO seeds/grains.

For example a lucerne/alfalfa, beet-pulp based diet is high calcium, low phosphorus. Add copra and it raises the phosphorus without also unnecessarily increasing calcium. And that helps you both meet phosphorus requirement and keep the calcium to phosphorus ratio balanced (FeedXL works all of this out for you!). So what’s the BUT?! Well, we use copra as a source of energy… and compared to OTHER energy sources like cereal grains and beet pulp, copra has BETTER quality protein… so it’s like an extra little bonus, in adding energy you also get more essential amino acids than if you had used say cooked barley or beet pulp. As long as it is being used as a source of energy and not being used for protein as such.Copra meal is high in fibre and it makes for great fibre diversity. If you have an easy keeper, 80 g/day will add fibre variety without adding too many calories.

We advise feeding your horse little and often, and always make sure your horse has access to clean, fresh water. Protein - CoolStance® contains the gluconeogenic amino acids asparagine, glutamine, arginine, alanine, valine and serine, which can be used to produce glucose for energy. For horses with metabolic problems or horses not engaged in demanding jobs, a fat and fibre diet is a good choice. However, horses who are performing well may require more NSC to ensure they have enough energy. This problem can be solved by adding starch to the diet, such as sweet feeds or straight cereal grains to increase energy levels. Many of these problems can be balanced in a concentrate that contains only part copra.CoolStance® has a unique aroma and taste, which most horses like. A small number of horses can find the product unusual and can be slow to take to it. Start with small amounts and build up slowly. Persist, as the results are worth the effort. Do you feed CoolStance® wet or dry? By-products of the oil industry are commonly used in animal feeds and are often nutritious additions to a diet. Copra is a by-product of coconut oil production from the dried white flesh of the coconut (not the dark husk or hull). Because of processing, copra is often brownish in color, not the bright white of store-bought coconut. If you find a product that contains copra meal as its base, you might be confronted with a few issues depending upon the specific fortification added to the feed. If unfortified, two concerns are notable. It is high in phosphorus. It is not unique in this respect. All grains, legumes, oilseeds and their by-products are high in phosphorus. On this, here is what you need to remember… no single ingredient is a perfect diet.

I would like permission to share with you the technical aspects and experiences of CoolStance as to how and why it is fed. I have joined other forum groups in the past such at Equines Eating Well to help answer some of the questions being asked. Protein – CoolStance® contains the gluconeogenic amino acids asparagine, glutamine, arginine, alanine, valine and serine, which can be used to produce glucose for energy.CoolStance must be fed in conjunction with additional roughage such as hay and/or pasture to ensure the horse obtains sufficient long fibre. The oil industry has many by-products that are used in animal feeds. They are often useful additions to a healthy diet. Coconut oil is made from the white flesh of the coconut, not the husk or the hull. Copra is a byproduct. Copra can often turn brownish due to processing and is not as bright as store-bought coconut.
