A times table square, also known as a multiplication square, is a grid, which includes key facts about the multiplication tables. The set of numbers (usually up to 10 or 12) are positioned horizontally and vertically and the result, once they're multiplied, is written in the grid. Multiplication squares are used in schools to help teach multiplication tables. They are a visual aid to allow children to remember multiplications. Using this multiplication square, children can find the answer to any multiplication problem up to 12 × 12 simply by matching the numbers at the top and sides of the times tables square. Follow the line from each number and where they meet gives the correct answer to the times tables calculation. A multiplication or times tables square can be used to learn the times tables, find division facts, find square numbers and multiples of a number, look for patterns between times tables and much more! Switching the multiplication sum around makes it easier to answer. One example of this is 6 x 7, which is often said to be quite hard. If you do 5 x 7 first and then add 1 x 7 it is suddenly easier to answer. You can do this the other way round too. For instance with 4 x 7 you can do 5 x 7 first then subtract 1 x 7.
