Her portrayal of love in so many forms, especially the parental love that Flora has for Nell, and Gordon has for Dougie were simply beautiful. I'll admit, after my initial pull towards this book, there was a lull where I had to force myself to pick back up and continue reading. Little Wing is the first book that I've read by Freya North and I was absolutely captivated by her beautiful writing. It is full of feeling and there is a sense of poignancy that gradually builds from the pages uncovering hidden secrets and complex family histories and circumstances. The characters felt very real and three dimensional and I was emotionally invested in them all so much so that I felt undeniably bereft when I turned the last page.

Learning about Flora and her journey was so beautiful and heartbreaking, her storyline was definitely my favorite. Apart from the descriptive writing, the characters and relationships were also well developed, especially the Adults with Learning Difficulties in the Chaffinch Cafe.

I chose it on the strength of North's earlier book, The Turning Point, which hit me like a ton of bricks with its emotional impact. A passionate reader since childhood, Freya was originally inspired by Mary Wesley, Rose Tremain and Barbara Trapido: fiction with strong and original characters. Nell's relationship with her mum Wendy (who had very challenging mental health issues) gave so much more depth to Nell's personality and patience. The first timeline begins in the 1960's with a pregnant 16-year-old banished from her home and sent away to one of the most remote parts of the UK. Little Wing gave me an unfiltered look at what matters in our busy lives, the moments of joy amidst the worry and uncertainty.Firstly, I question whether someone could really be in their mid 30s and have never seen their own birth certificate/know where they were born. In 2004 Nell Hartley, cafe owner in bustling Colchester, discovers something about herself and her family which will changer her life forever. The characters of Sophia Keaton and Gordon Munro are very attractive and it is no surprise that the original idea for the novel came from a memoir of a real district nurse of the Outer Hebrides. Thank you to The Pigeonhole and to the author for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

In 1969, a sixteen year old girl gets pregnant and is sent away to live with a relative in the Scottish Hebrides. But it hasn’t made me want to run out and read all of Freya North’s back catalogue as there’s other easy readers out there that are better. The backdrop of the Isle of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides plays a starring role in this story and rightly so. Also, this is the second book I've read recently with a young mother raising a baby completely on her own in an isolated location and absolutely revelling in every minute of it.

I hadn't read a Freya North book for years - but then again I don't think she has written anything new for quite some time. It was interesting and the characters felt real, unlike many recent CRs where the same cheesy, vulgar characters seem to keep on popping up.I have to admit I think that would be my idea of hell and I'm not sure it would have been helpful for me to read this when my kids were little.
