Where I think this product would benefit someone new to coloured pencil is as a practice pencil. I also think that given the nature of the breakage I experienced I would caution anyone who wanted to use these for a larger drawing as you won’t be able to replace used-up pencils without purchasing a whole new set.

Although suitable for all coloured pencil artists, they are aimed particularly at students and hobbyists, for whom price is a determining factor. Chromaflow pencils offer a good quality of creative experience without breaking the bank, and are a great option for beginners to experiment with and build on their skills. This doesn’t mean that professionals cannot use these pencils, it just means that you will need to factor in the lightfastness of some of the pencils ahead of using them. I for example would use them for creating a piece to make prints from and would keep the original if I had used any of the lower lightfast rating pencils in the mix. I would strongly recommend doing tests on different paper swatches before you try a full piece with any new pencil. The combination of the type of paper you use with any coloured pencil product can greatly affect your success with it. Often it takes a bit of time to find the right combination of paper and pencil with the techniques you like using to get successful results. There is a range of 24 colours. When dry colour is applied they are all shades of grey. The colour only really comes out when water is applied.

Derwent Studio pencils for detailed work

I love that the Drawing and the Lightfast have a crossover of colour names so you can utilise say the Mars Violet (another fave) in the Drawing range for the underpainting of a piece and then use the Lightfast one to add details. Derwent Chromaflow The Drawing and Lightfast ranges are 100% lightfast and therefore perfect if you are selling your original works. These are considered professional quality pencils and they are all of lightfast level of either LF1 or LF2. This, therefore, means that they are considered fully compliant with the ASTM 6901 and Blue Wool Scale ISO 105 standards. A summary of the three pencil ranges I use Holbein colored pencils - beautiful pastels, deep darks and stunning brights. The perfect pencil to delight artists? From a colour-matching perspective, the core vs the colour-dipped end vs the pigment on paper appears to be a pretty good match across all of the colours featured in this set of 12. That’s usually a pretty good sign that all colours will be however there’s usually always one or two that are a bit questionable.

Derwent Chromaflow Brand New 72 Set — The Art Gear Guide

Whilst these Derwent pencils handle well, the 8mm round barrel does not fit in all power sharpeners and that can be inconvenient. This type of card is invaluable to keep with all your derwent pencils. Watercolour pencils tend to become much stronger on the paper when wet with water, so this guide will help you spot areas and colours to take care with. Starting with the range that has been around for the longest and those are the Drawing pencils. The Drawing range has a distinctive velvety finish and come in a limited but beautiful natural earthy colour range. These are ideal for wildlife drawings, nature studies and creative atmospheric, evocative landscapes. They are also used for portraiture. Derwent Chromaflow Pencil Tins contain a selection of soft, creamy textured, wax-based coloured pencils in a balanced spectrum of colours. We use different woods in the manufacture of our pencils and sometimes the wood may change during the lifetime of a pencil range. Chromaflow is made using fine grade pine which is perfect for the slightly slimmer barrel of the Chromaflow pencils.I think it fair to say that these fit into a logical slot as a softer version of the Artists/Studio pencil. Although not Derwent pencils this line was introduced early in 2012. They are triangular shaped soft wax crayons containing a soluble medium and strong pigment content. They especially work well with Derwent Coloursoft Pencils. Chromaflow pencils are also erasable so you can use this to an advantage to create highlights in your work. Chromaflow is a great value starter range

Derwent Chromaflow pencils provide artists with an affordable professional quality product which is easy to layer and blend thanks to the richly pigmented smooth texture, providing a velvety laydown. As you can see from the Chromaflow, right from the get go, the very first light layer, the pigment strength is tremendous. I always apply 5 layers as it is generally considered a good idea to apply at least 5 layers before using Odourless Mineral Spirits. The final column is a single heavy and the paper used for this test was the Hahnemühle Agave Watercolor paper, this paper has a nice texture to it, 70% Agave and 30% Cotton.

The two issues I had with this style of marketing were as follows, if the Chromaflow were to be a replacement or at least near as dam it replacement to the Prismacolor for UK based colored pencil artists, why release them first in the US, when they are supposed to fill a gap in the UK market? My second issue was, if you are going to try and fill in for a product that sports a palette of 150, surely releasing only sets of 12 and 24 is way off the mark. Hi Lisa, this is a very helpful article – thank you for sharing your experience in such detail! Would you mind sharing what paper you use that gets 12 layers of colour pencil? ( from your chart) The Earth colours are totally light stable but there are a few in the light shades (e.g. Pink), where you will need to be cautious over the risk of fading.

One thing that is notable between the pencils is the look and feel of the pencils themselves. The Chromaflow are definitely thinner and lighter due to the size of the barrel and the type of wood used in manufacturing but this does not affect the quality of the cores. A note about lightfastness Procolour are not quite as vibrant, so a completed all Procolour artwork will be recognisable by the more subdued but possibly more detailed finish against Coloursoft. I suggest you do your own chart showing the colours both in their dry state and also after wetting. The darker colours come up very strong and only show differences when well diluted. I strongly advise that the first time you use them, you test the pencils and paper out first, and keep your pigment strength low on the paper until you are used to them. They probably have the highest colour strength of any aquarelle pencils. As the Chromaflow is a new product and still not available in certain countries, with regards the lightfast information I went straight to the amazing individual I talk to from Derwent about products, I say amazing due to the fact anything I ask for regarding details of products, accurate information is always supplied which is such a refreshing thing for a reviewer. This line of wax based coloured pencils were launched in the UK in mid July 2017. They have a handling feel with softness somewhere between the harder Artist range and the softer Coloursoft. But don't let this minor hitch deter you! This issue typically comes up only when you're heavily diluting the colours. Even then, it's not a common problem. When you're using these pencils in their dry form, and then adding water to your paper, you're more than likely to be just fine. One thing to keep in mind
