Year Old: The 18-year-old whisky is matured in specially selected casks to give it its salty, sweet nose, rich, fruity vanilla flavours, and gentle, spicy finish. Established in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell, Springbank is one of the few Scottish distilleries that has remained in the hands of the founding family, J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd. In fact, it’s the oldest independent, family-owned distillery in Scotland. This family are also the force behind the Glengyle distillery where Kilkerran is made. So really, without that first illicit still set up by Archibald Mitchell and the spirit kept alive by his ancestors, there would probably be no whisky from Campbeltown and Scotch would be all the poorer for it.

We looked into the history of the Springbank Distillery last month, so rather than rehash that, let’s look into how Springbank saved the Campbletown region from being de-listed as an ‘official’ whisky region. Nose: Sweet, bacon frazzles, lemon citrus, slightly coastal, fruity, grapefruit, a little chalky and ozone/hot sandy beach.

Let’s look at the positives first: Those are some clean sherry casks. No sulphur at all, which for me has been a bit of an issue over recent years with some of the sherry-dominant Springbank releases. Once home to some thirty distilleries, Campbeltown was a major player in the world of whisky. However, most of them have long since gone out of business, and now only around four remain. The most famous is Springbank, who also produce the peated Longrow and the triple-distilled and completely unpeated Hazelburn. Den nyeste variant, Hazelburn, så dagens lys i 1997 da man for første gang forsøgte sig med helt urøget og tripeldestilleret whisky. Ud af de cirka 175.000 liter, det lille Campbeltown-destilleri producerer om året, er 80% Springbank, cirka 10% Longrow og 10% Hazelburn. Kilkerran 8-Year-Old: This whisky features an aroma of peat and green apple, an earthy, salty flavour with hints of icing sugar, and a smooth finish.
