If you wish to return this item to Robert Dyas, you can only do so by the following method: 1. Visit Your Local Robert Dyas Store When silver is mixed with other metals, it become an alloy. Sterling silver is the most common alloy used to make jewellery and a wide variety of tableware, and it is almost always mixed with copper for lasting durability. Sterling silver is also referred to as 925, which means it is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals. However, some sterling contains a bit more silver: 95% or 950. This Goddard's cloth doesn’t clean silver as well as some heavier duty solutions, but it does provide a high shine polish with minimal work and scrubbing. The reusable cloth measures 17.5 x 13 inches, larger than silver cleaning wipes. While it can remove some light tarnish, it isn’t the best choice for antique or heavily tarnished silver. For routine upkeep and polishing, this is the easiest and least messy way to go. Any type of silver alloy can benefit from a silver cleaner once it tarnishes. However, keep in mind that plated items must be cleaned gently to avoid wearing down the silver layers.

Q. Which type of silver cleaner works best for sterling jewellery with links and grooves that are difficult to clean using a cloth? Some types of silver cleaners can be used to clean other types of metals, such as gold, platinum, and brass. It's important to note that you should not put any polishing cloth in the laundry. They have a polishing solution in the fibers and washing them will remove that benefit. If the cloth does get dirty, you will need to replace it. You should also replace the cloth periodically because frequent use will use up the embedded polishing agents. Each cloth can be used for months or even years, depending on how often you polish your pieces and how many you have.

Why does silver tarnish?

Some silver jewellery pieces have oxidised finishes and are often referred to as antique silver. This dark colouration is designed to give sterling silver jewellery an aged effect, and it can be damaged or even removed by some silver cleaners. Wiping these pieces gently with a silver cleaning cloth is your best option to avoid damage. Add salt ( sodium chloride) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to the water. Some recipes call for 2 teaspoons of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of salt, whereas others call for 2 tablespoons each of baking soda and salt. There's really no need to measure the amounts precisely—just use a spoonful or two of each substance.

Dips, which are sometimes called baths, are liquid solutions designed for dipping and soaking silver items with various degrees of tarnish. Some solutions come with trays for coating small pieces like rings or pendants. Items like flatware can be dipped, and larger pieces can be wiped with the liquid. Most dips require rinsing, and some include polishing cloths. Although the liquid can be a bit messy, dips are highly effective at removing even stubborn tarnish. Always follow the instructions that come with the silver cleaner you choose. This will help you achieve the best results. Most silver items are actually an alloy, which means that the silver is mixed with another metal to make it strong enough for everyday use or wear. Although other metals are sometimes used, copper is most commonly combined with fine silver to create a more durable alloy. When exposed to air, the alloy tarnishes in reaction to sulfur, pollutants, and moisture. The result is a dull, darkened, or even dirty appearance to what was once a brilliant shine. Types of silver And, of course, you should wear gloves and ventilate your space when using this cleaner. When tarnish comes off, hydrogen sulfide is created, which can be pretty smelly. It’ll stink just like rotten eggs. Because the fumes are so strong, it’s advisable to work in smaller areas and allow yourself to get fresh air between applications. It’s also important to rinse each item thoroughly after you use Tarn-X. While this stuff is a miracle worker, you need to know that you can’t use this solution on gold or diamonds. Just read the instructions thoroughly before using. Some silver items are difficult to clean and polish because of their unique shape and size. For those items use Goddard’s Silver Dip.
