At the beginning of the story, a prosperous family is visited by the mysterious Inspector, who tells them that a young woman has just killed herself. One of them got her fired from her job, another one seduced her and left her when he found she was pregnant, and so on.

Synopsis: The play is a three-act drama, which takes place on a single night in 1912, focusing on the prosperous middle-class Birling family, who live in a comfortable home in Brumley, "an industrial city in the north Midlands".It deals with issues of exploitation, abandonment and social ruin, within the framework of a detective mystery. A clever boy, the son of a schoolteacher, Priestley went to grammar school, and then studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, after a period of military service during the First World War.

It has been a perennial favourite, being translated and produced all over the world, and a film of it from 1954 starring Alistair Sim is still popular. The family, closely knit and friendly at the beginning of the evening, is shown up as selfish, self-centered or cowardly, its good humor turning to acid, and good fellowship to dislike, before the evening is over.

Priestly obviously has never studied the work of Chekhov, otherwise he would know that if you have to tell the audience how a character says a line, the line isn't good enough. This book is still studied in schools I think and I'm not surprised as there's so much discussion to come from it. The polysyndetic line foreshadows the struggles of year 11 children, as ‘fire’ connotes bonfires and burning books (or plays). This is NOT the case - that's just a twist - if you had assumed that than you'll not be able to sympathise with Eva Smith's plight (society prefers strong characters even if s/he are victims suffering the utmost misfortune). When I first read the play - I remember a few classmates being confused that one family encountered the same girl, which went beyond coincidence - far too contrived.
