Palate: Sweet and spicy, the palate initially brings notes of chilli flakes, ginger and honey, before chocolate-covered coffee beans join the fray. Soft tendrils of peat smoke appear, flanked by orange peel, walnuts and leafy, green herbs. Finish: Sea salt crystals and bold peat smoke linger in the finish, as well as roasted coffee beans, seaweed and tobacco. Ledaig has only recently become widely available as a single malt after renewed investment and promotion in the 1990s and early 2000s by former owners Burn Stewart and their successors Distell.

The second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, the Isle of Mull lies off the coast of Argyll and Bute, west Scotland. The island’s capitol is the colourful town of Tobermory, most famous for the colourfully-painted houses that overlook the harbour and for being the home of Mull’s only whisky distillery. Named after the town, Tobermory distillery started life in the 1790s, first as a brewery and then a distillery, under the name Ledaig, from the Gaelic name of the area, meaning ‘safe haven’. Tobermory has passed through many hands and seen many opening and closings of its doors throughout its existence, but is currently owned by liquor conglomerate Distell, which acquired Burn Stewart Distillers as a whole in 2013. Burn Stewart houses other notable Scotch whisky brands such as Bunnahabhain, and a few less known brands. Despite bureaucracy of business practices, Ledaig remains a more affordable island whisky with interesting production. When the Tobermory distillery was reopened after many years in 1972 it was actually named Ledaig - however many casks were labeled as Tobermory also, and almost all production in these early years was peated. Ledaig whiskies from the early 1970s were still being bottled well into the 2000s and they often portray the richly peated character of the distillate.We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. You are responsible for all activities through your account. You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide to us in relation to your account, and for updating it where necessary. You are not allowed to create multiple accounts. We may terminate or temporarily suspend your account to protect you, ourselves or our partners from (suspected) identity theft or other (suspected) fraudulent (e.g. false, misleading, deceptive) activity. Comment: There is a good balance between savoury and sweet, the coastal character of the whisky is clear, it reminds me of bonfires on the beach. Its time in sherry casks has also left its mark, mingling with the peatiness without being overpowered.

Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Youngish expressions of the 1970s Ledaig vintages were bottled in the eighties and are considered the greatest examples of the early Ledaig malts. These bottlings are classics, produced in an old-style way with slower fermentation and distillation methods. Every bit as potent as many Islay whiskies from the same time, these Ledaigs balance intense peat flavours with beautiful coastal and fruit-laden undercurrents. They are expensive but well worth seeking out. Sadly, however, the early 1970s revival was short-lived and the distillery was closed again in 1975. In from Port Ellen Maltings on Islay, Ledaig’s malt is lightly peated to 37ppm before being delivered. The water used in production flows from a private lake near the Mishnish Lochs, to the Tobermory River, flowing underneath island peat fields as it makes its way to the distillery. This combination of peated elements give Ledaig much of its character. Tasting Notes:The character of Ledaig from the late seventies and early eighties can often contain some very attractive tropical and green fruit notes, laced with some peat oils and delicate smokiness. The best examples of this era include the old red label 20-year-old and blue label 15-year-old official bottlings. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”).
