I usually don’t recommend seeing lots of cities in a short period of time but if you’re interested in a day trip I would do a one-day trip to Umbria. It’s spectacular, close to Rome, and marvellous in springtime (Assisi is a must-see). Otherwise you could stay in Rome and explore the surrounding towns like the Castelli Romani, Lake Bracciano, and do that as a day trip, which I also recommend and I’m sure the kids would love. 🙂
