Still I waited. A Frenchman came out and informed me in broken English that Paul could not be found. He was not in building number five - his home. Armed with my embassy papers, I ventured to the jail and waited and waited for the former football star to emerge, fearing it may become a wasted exercise. I had to heal my own life and past. I had to shed light on the reality of what my mother went through,” he said. This book is over all a really great book. It tells an amazing story about a a young man named Warren Fellows who was drug dealer who goes to a horrible to a horrible and terrifying prison and the things he had to go through. This book is for anyone who really likes thrilling and suspenseful book. Fellows goes into great depth regarding the squaler like conditions with the rats the size of cats and contraband being a way of life and coping in such horrible conditions. The description he gives of Thai prison life is really a living Hell on this earth.

After constant delays, it took until July 1981 before Hayward, Fellows, Sinclair and taxi driver Kitty Imsap were sentenced. Hayward received 20 years, lighter than the others because "he was used by the narcotics syndicate" while the other three were sentenced to 33 years and eight months each (Hayward and Fellows later had two years added to their sentence after being caught with heroin inside Bang Kwang). Here the foreigners must mix with the Thais and there are 27 in our cell - it' smaller than this room," he added, pointing to the room in which I sat, no bigger than 40 square metres. The second major outfall was the varied reader response to the story dictated through letters to the editor - more than 100 – many of which RLW published. The first batch was bitterly negative, with some refusing to buy the magazine again because my story had "glorified a drug runner".His only motivation is the thought of seeing Gail, Bradley, Kellie and Belinda. For six and a half years he has kept going. He must have the strength to go on some more. Following that, Abdul Rahman Khan, a 'close associate' of Massey, was shot by masked men while behind the wheel of a Mercedes on February 18, 2015. Paul Hayward was a tough, pugnacious five-eighth from Newtown, a scrapper in the old Bluebag tradition — who mixed professional boxing with his rugby league career. Physically I feel good. But everything gets me down. One thing I've learned here is to be patient. You're always waiting, at first it was for the court appearances, now it's for any sport that might be played." The embassy had passed on some copies of RLW we had posted during the weeks before when organising the visit.

I walked into the office — well, there were a couple of old desks on a cement floor — and handed over my letter of introduction from the Australian Embassy. It was my passport to Bang Kwang, and a sitting with Paul Hayward.

He did return, in April 1989 – 10 and a half years after having a .38 police pistol held to his temple in his Bangkok hotel. He'd received a pardon for his good behavior by the king of Thailand as part of his 60th birthday celebrations. Earlier it had been reported Hayward had tested HIV positive due to using a contaminated heroin syringe while in jail.

On 12 October 1978, the rooms occupied by Fellows and Hayward at the Montien Hotel in Bangkok were raided by Thai police. The pair were arrested when 8.5 kilograms of * was found in a suitcase in Hayward's room. Fellows alleges they were subjected to physical and psychological abuse at the hands of Thai Narcotics Suppression Unit officers who demanded they sign statements which they could not read because they were written in Thai. The officers demanded Fellows and Hayward make statements incriminating Sinclair. Fellows claims they resisted because Sinclair was innocent, but he eventually relented when officers informed them they were to be executed without trial under Article 27 of the military law and dragged Hayward outside for execution. Fellows and Hayward agreed to sign the statement and Sinclair was arrested and charged. Two unexpected but compelling things happened after publication that was preceded by an advertising campaign on Channel 9, which led to that particular RLW issues being one of the most read. Members of the rival A Team, said to be led by Stephen Britton and aligned with Paul Massey, were accused of being behind threats made towards Carroll's former partner over five years ago. I later learned former Eels and Rabbitohs player and future successful coach, Graham Murray, was Hayward's last visitor the previous October while "Muz" was on the way home from a world trip. On arriving in Thailand, Fellows and Hayward met William Sinclair by chance. Sinclair now lived in Bangkok and owned the Texas Bar. Sinclair took them to his bar, and in a drunken state, attempted to obtain information from them about their trip. Unbeknown to them, the trio were under surveillance and the meeting appeared to police to incriminate Sinclair, even though according to Fellows, he was not involved. Fellows claims that there were many warning signs and that the night before they were arrested he had a "moment of clarity" and resolved to wash the heroin down the bath drain. But he fell asleep and was woken in the morning by police. [6] Arrest [ edit ] He really had to put us down to push his own barrow, to try to prove his innocence," said Fellows, whom Sinclair had painted as a hopeless jail heroin addict.
