The Telegraph yesterday reported that UK dairy industry bosses flew to Brussels last week for talks over this issue. Dairy processors, which act as the link between farmers and retailers, are very concerned over costs which have undergone a 'seismic' change since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Michael Oakes, the dairy board chair of the National Farmers’ Union, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme this morning: "It's been a contentious subject (the price of milk) at a retail level for many years. But what we've seen over the last couple of years is a very sharp rise in inflationary input costs at farm level and then since the Ukrainian war we’ve seen a seismic change (in costs). It just hasn’t been sustainable. Mr Oakes added that these price increases for farmers is likely to be a long-term problem. "The implications of current rises could well last for two years. Feed, fuel and fertiliser are the key inputs and we’re also seeing issues with labour and the costs of labour so we’ve got a whole tsunami of costs coming towards us and it’s really really difficult," he said. He drives a traditional electric milk float, like the majority of the Creamline Dairies milkmen. It travels at speeds of 10-20mph.

U ltimately farmers are making decision to either cut production to try and stay in business to get through this or face those costs up. But we need support from the market level ultimately. We have had over 1,000 customers register with us since Christmas. Around 200-300 people registered the previous year. In business terms, that’s pretty substantial. At the moment it looks like there is a demand.” Read More Related ArticlesThis led to commenters speculating a Boxing Day roll-out date, which might be a bit early for Easter prep, but we’ll allow it if that means we get Creme Egg Bars all year round. Rob, of Little Hulton, starts his shift whatever the weather at 1.30am, delivering milk to Cadishead, Eccles, Walkden, Irlam, Farnworth and Kearsley. The best thing about the job is getting home early, no rush hour traffic and meeting people and being out.

By the third quarter of this year we will have a plastic free aisle on the online shop, so people can make informed decisions and be as green as they want - or not, as the case may be.” I don’t drink milk on the job, I don’t really drink much milk to be honest. It is better quality than the milk you get in a supermarket, it tastes better out of the glass bottles as well.” Creamline Dairies, which runs 120 milk rounds across the region, has seen 1,000 new customers sign up for milk deliveries between January and March this year.

But for all the enthusiasm about the bar, some commenters were adamant that it was simply too early. ‘Let’s have Christmas first!’ one Facebook user requested, while another was more blunt about their seasonal preferences, saying, ‘We haven’t have Christmas yet, go away.’ The programme showed a mother whale mourning her calf that died due to plastic poisoning, and as a result environmentally conscious shoppers are switching to having their milk delivered in reusable glass bottles from the milkman - to cut down on their plastic consumption. The Manchester Evening News spoke to milkman Robert Arnold to find out about how traditional milk delivery is thriving in the region - and what it is like to work a busy milk round. Unless farmers can make a return on producing milk the milk won’t get produced ultimately and we’ve seen costs go up and perhaps we may see buyers changing their behaviour but some of the alternatives are also going to go up at the same time."
