Aberfeldy's 21 year old was re-launched with a new design in 2015 and lies within theircore range of bottlings (12, 16, 18, 21 & 28 year olds). It's a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks and has won several gold medals and 'best in show' awards. It's a whisky that has always held a soft spot in my heart, and one to this day which I still use as a 'learning tool' for introducingnewbies to the more woody flavours which can be associated with longer periods of cask maturation. I was 16 years old then and my holiday job was as a grouse beater, driving the birds across the moors to the 'guns' sitting in (and on) their butts, waiting to unleash both barrels at anything which came their way. The Although there is a chance of more settled conditions at the start of this period, the rest of November looks set to return to predominantly unsettled with further rain or showers at times. However, perhaps less-unsettled than earlier in the month, with more drier and brighter intervals likely at times, perhaps more especially in the northwest. Temperatures will be around normal for the time of year, but in any drier interludes, particularly if the wind comes from a more easterly direction, temperatures could take a dip with some frost by night. Palate: Well-rounded and mellow, more apple at first, along with poached pear in dark chocolate sauce, soon joined by clementine segments and honey on toast. The distillery itself puts out three single malts as part of it's original bottles: the 12, 18 and the 21 with the rest going into blends or snapped up by independents. beach will be from these waves. If the arrow points towards land, most of the waves’ power will reach Dry evening with some clear spells though becoming cloudier later. Outbreaks of rain will arrive later in the night, some heavy outbreaks by morning. Strengthening easterly winds. Minimum temperature 4 °C. Wednesday: More wet and windy weather spreading in on Thursday and lasting into Friday in east, as west turns brighter. Saturday brighter with a few showers, lighter winds. The older version of the Aberfeldy 21 Year Old was matured exclusively on bourbon casks, but this more recent release – from 2014 – has some sherry matured whisky in the mix.

Unfortunately the arrival is pretty weak. The fruitiness now translates mostly into blood oranges, grapefruit and sultanas. A touch of woodspice with cinnamon and nutmeg in the lead, followed by some ginger and liquorice. Hint of chocolate and apricot marmalade. While its “ Exceptional Cask” releases are bottled at cask strength, the three whiskies we look at today — representing the core of Aberfeldy’s single malt lineup, all formally relaunched a few years ago — are all bottled at 80 proof. All three are aged in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, first fill oloroso sherry casks, and refill casks which are then married together before bottling — though note the additional aging on the 16 year old below.
