Dialogue finds a natural center positioning and presents clearly and with no struggles in prioritization. I think it boils down to the simple fact that I saw them both back to back when I was 11 years old, the original bored me but I could relate to all the kids in the sequel.

The JAWS 4K cover caused quite the controversary amongst many JAWS fans when its image was first announced, not to mention the misprinting in the brochure that came with it - clearly they didn't use Polly for the printing. The track sounds very similar to that on previous versions – it’s a solid but unexciting mix that feels somewhat hemmed in by its single speaker origins. So while it never gets close to the majesty of the first film, this sequel remains infinitely better than it had any right to be. On the bonus features front, the same set of extras from the 2016 disc are carried over and are on the actual 4K disc. Just when you thought it was safe to get your DVD or Bluray copy of JAWS 2 out, it is headed for a 4K release. The franchise quickly follows what would become the typical slasher structure, especially for slasher sequels, with more of the killer, more deaths, and a lot more blood. Add in a subtle HDR pass, which now provides that little touch of sparkle – all the sun light glinting off the water now seems to leap off the screen in a way it didn’t previously – and shade (the shadows in the killer whale bite now show much more of the make-up work), and this release looks like it has a new lease of life breathed into it from a colour perspective. John Williams: The Music of Jaws 2– John Williams, who composed the score for the movie, is an absolute marvel when it comes to music and I really liked watching this featurette on him, very interesting.

Fine detail also seems to have had a boost too – back to that image of the killer whale on the beach, the lines around the grizzly bite are now much sharper and cleaner and give a much more pronounced and textured image. Not only does the film and sound look better even that it did even during its initial theatrical release, it’s hard to imagine that it could ever look better. The white scale is just as impressive, with highlights giving pop to the picture; glints of moon- or sun-light off the water, metallic sheen, sweat, everything looks so natural. It also marked Spielberg’s second collaboration with composer John Williams (their first was The Sugarland Express), whose iconic score and theme not only won him an Academy Award, it set a new standard in the use of music to create cinematic suspense. Grossing hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office and creating the classic summer movie event all in one stroke, Jaws is a classic that stands the test of time.

The cast gives it their all, especially Scheider who stands front and center without having to contend with the scene-stealing chops of Robert Shaw. Brody makes a fool of himself, not wanting to repeat what happened before, and is soon fired from his job for making a scene at the beach. These remain present in this restoration because they are as much part of the source as the image itself – so it is likely that expectations may need to be managed prior to viewing. Facial features, production design, costume textures, and all of the damage and burns on the shark’s face look sharp and clear.

Jaws 2 isn’t the greatest movie ever and can be considered an unnecessary sequel to a classic, but it’s still a damned fun flick. Though not the best soundtrack out there, this serves it’s purpose and I don’t think anyone will be disappointed with it. Unlike the first film that held back the shark as long as possible (partly due to technical difficulties with Bruce), Jaws 2 gives the audience what they paid to see, lots of blood and lots of screams. There is nothing new in the extras department, but a whole host are included on the UHD, listed below, for everything, the included Blu-ray is the one to spin. and so my AVR matrixes this out to be mono and firmly locked to the centre speaker with only the merest hint of audio activity in the L and R speakers.Jaws was a perfect storm, the inability of ‘Bruce’ the shark to work in the water forcing an invention of filming that proved to be outstanding; casting, story, score and director – stunning. You also get a nifty 44-page softcover book of liner notes, rare photographs, and production artwork. The overhead channels are used sparingly or to fill out the score, which comes at you from up on high, with underwater effects giving the best usage; the destruction of the shark-tank is immense!

There is also a great improvement to image stability; gone are the wobbles and the flickers found on the Blu-ray.

The cast of JAWS 2 includes Roy Scheider, reprising his role as Police Chief Martin Brody, Lorraine Gary as Brody's wife Ellen, and Murray Hamilton as Mayor Larry Vaughn. As we all know, yellow tends to be the harbinger of doom in JAWS films , just ask Pipit and Alex Kintner.
