Blending dense, tightly-wound music with anguished song writing, Mind Bomb is an eloquent statement of rage. Play it very loud, very late and very alone.”

The album is an absolute stunner and confirms Matt Johnson’s position as one of the best songwriters in the country.”Each song is a spiritual quest. His music is cathartic, instinctive, perhaps occasionally prophetic.

It features one of Sinead O'Connor's finest performances. It's a heartbreaker. The knowledge and sad acceptance by the one of the other's distance, the other of the one's infidelity. David Roberts, ed. (2006). British Hit Singles and Albums. Guinness World Records Limited. p.555. ISBN 978-1904994107. Mind Bomb is the third studio album by English post-punk band The The. [7] [8] It was released by Some Bizzare/ Epic on 11 July 1989 and recorded between October 1988 and May 1989. It is the band's first album to feature former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Heim, Chris (10 August 1989). "The The: Mind Bomb (Epic)". Chicago Tribune . Retrieved 26 September 2017.Few artworks of any type will ever capture a time and place with the definitive gaze Johnson applied to mid-Eighties Britain on Infected. I borrow a phrase there from one of the likewise rare spirits who might be described as even remotely kindred to him. Where Howard Devoto sang in riddles, parables and allusive nightmare images, Johnson was blunt as a hammer, piercing as nails. You knew precisely what he was getting at, and you knew precisely where he was getting at it: you felt it pounded in though skin and tendons. A crucifixion of a kind. Think I'm exaggerating? Listen to Infected again and see if he isn't nailing himself to a figurative cross alongside this island Golgotha's irredeemable brigands. Both the sonic and impassioned resonance of this album grips you by the throat, by the spine, by the heart and lines you up for an aural punch you won't forget. As well as a full band line-up, the record has quite a few guest musicians including Sinéad O'Connor, Chris White (Dire Straits touring member), Danny Cummings (Mark Knopfler) and Wix (Soul Mining) among others. This large cast means the very colourful nature of the music from the earlier albums is till here, The The are now painting with more guitars and horns and fewer synths. The studio EP Shades of Blue was released in 1990. This included cover versions of Fred Neil's "Dolphins" and Duke Ellington's "Solitude" as well as a new original song "Jealous of Youth" and a live version of "Another Boy Drowning" from Burning Blue Soul. This and a later EP of remixes, 1993's Dis-infected, were compiled into a 1994 full-length album for the North American market called Solitude. In case that doesn't clinch it, he winds up repeatedly keening, "I KNOW YOU! from a previous incarnation." By this time, Marr's trademark shuddering guitar has taken to circling the beat with a measured, sharp-edged funk riff and the entire business has gathered a torpid but terrifying momentum that can only end with it, and its protagonist, rolling unstoppably atop its object of desire. It's like being courted by a Panzer division. Come hither, or else.
