Polysorbate 80 is an emulsifier. We know oil and water don’t usually mix. But with the addition of an emulsifier we can help them blend and dissolve to create a nicer bath experience and helps keep the oils and colours in the water rather than on the sides of the tub. Moisture is the enemy when making bath bombs! If kids have just washed their hands before starting, make sure they are COMPLETELY dry. If it is raining out or very humid, you may want to leave bath bomb making for another day. The chemical reaction in bath bombs is so sensitive, moisture in the air will trigger a reaction. Crabbe, Goyle and, of course, Malfoy feature prominently throughout the Harry Potter stories. Malfoy goes on a particularly fascinating journey as he grows and matures, struggling to hang onto his empathy as he is pulled towards the all encompassing allure of power. I highly recommend using safety goggles, gloves and a face mask when mixing up bath bombs, especially if the kids are helping you. Citric acid can be irritating and you definitely do not want to get it in your eyes. With my heart condition, I also find it is always best to be safe and protect my airways when working with anything that can become airborne. Always use common sense and protect yourself. And of course, kids should always do this project under responsible adult supervision. Step-by-Step Instructions For Making Harry Potter Golden Snitch Bath Bombs So why don’t bath bombs react right away like they do in our other experiments? For the reaction to happen we need to add water. In our other experiments we usually use vinegar as our acid which already has water to activate the reaction. When making bath bombs our citric acid and baking soda (base) are in dry powder form. They can mingle without any reaction. That is until we add the all important… water!

When you are ready for your reveal, add warm water to the tub. Drop the cauldron in. The white will foam, then you will see the lighter color, and finally the darker color. From start to finish, this process can take 3 to 5 minutes. Harry Potter Cauldron Bath Bombs Video Demonstration When it comes to education I am a firm believer that with the right passion, interest and drive, anyone can learn anything. When someone is struggling with a lesson or concept, we need to change the way we are teaching until we find the way the student learns. In this case, we are bringing in something else to really power up the passion to learn. Harry Potter! Once we add water, citric acid [C6H8O7] and sodium bicarbonate [NaHCO3] (baking soda) react to form sodium citrate [Na3C6H5O7], water, and carbon dioxide [CO2] gas. There are a number of reasons you may love or hate glitter. If you love glitter feel free to use a good quality cosmetic glitter or a biodegradable glitter to be environmentally friendly (something we recommend around here). However, another option is to leave out the glitter entirely from this recipe. The choice is yours. The collection caught the imagination of Harry Potter and beauty fans alike, calling it 'every Harry Potter fans' dream', with others saying, 'the line truly has it all'. InsideTheMagic.net dubbed it 'more exciting than a trip to Hogsmeade!', while ThePopInsider.com praised the collection for its 'ultimate nostalgia' feel, promising the range would 'add a little Lumos to your life'. Now, we know Professor Snape would be all about the facts and details. So let’s chat a bit about how bath bombs work.

Later on, Harry asks the Sorting Hat again, and the Hat still insists Harry would have done well in Slytherin. Themed around the Deathly Hallows, the most powerful objects in the wizarding world, these brushes will certainly help you become the Master of Make-up! Hogwarts house themed eye shadow palettes Enjoy your Harry Potter Bath Bomb! Simply add to your bath water to start fizzing. I recommend removing the feathers before adding to the water, but my son thought the soggy feathers were hilarious. The choice is yours! The Science Behind The Fizzy Magic in A Harry Potter Bath Bomb Our severely conflicted potions teacher, Professor Snape, would insist that we turn our bath bomb making projects into a lesson. It fizzes, erupts, smells (amazing), sounds like a potion the Half Blood Prince would be proud of!

Now the best part, adding the feathers so your Golden Snitch can take flight! Trim the hard part of the feather stem to about 1/8 inch. Then very gently slip into the side of the bath bomb. Repeat on the other side. First, use caution with the dry ingredients. Citric acid in particular is an irritant if it becomes airborne. This recipe doesn’t use Activated Charcoal, but that ingredient is another one that likes to take flight! Work in a well ventilated place and ensure your kids are mature enough to understand how to stir gently and pour carefully. Usually I recommend bath bomb making for tweens and teens. Another thing we learned while making this video is that you get better reactions the warmer the water. Hmmmm… I see a bath bomb scientific investigation in our future…. Add approximately 1 teaspoon of cocoa extract (adjust to suit your preference) and 1 tablespoon of polysorbate 80 to the oil and stir to blend.

Remember though, you need nice warm water to really trigger the reaction. We learned that in our Bath Bomb Science Fair project! For those who aren’t so sure where they belong, you could always get all four palettes, boxed up in this special ‘vault’. Harry Potter house nail polish strips It’s kind of funny how the ideas build on themselves around here. I’ve been a HUGE fan of Harry Potter ever since I read Sorcerer’s Stone in 1999. About 5 years ago I started reading aloud the book to my kids. If I remember correctly, I got about 3 chapters in before my oldest, who was 7 at the time, took the book from me and devoured the whole thing in 3 days. He then went on to read the entire series three times over. In our previous bath bomb making activities( Mermaid and The Avengers) the kids learned about the chemical reaction that takes place to cause the fizz. The reaction between an acid and a base is facilitated by the addition of water. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is released in gaseous form, creating the loveable and enjoyable fizzy, bubbly bath bomb. In this bath bomb recipe the chemical reaction is between citric acid and cream of tartar (acids) and baking soda (base).

However, be cautious when having younger kids help with the powders. I find when the younger kids help, the citric acid powder especially likes to become airborne and can be a bit of an irritant. Kids seem to put lots of energy into dumping the ingredients into the bowl! It is best to make in a well ventilated place and if you have concerns, use respiratory protection. I still find this activity is best with older kids, tweens and teens. But with lots of adult supervision, younger kids can do this too. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients. Mix together well using your hands. Really work it all together and make sure any lumps are broken up. Once it reaches the consistency of wet sand and will hold a shape when you press it with your hand, it is ready. The more you work it, the better you will find this wet sand consistency.
