And just to be clear, this set of cans was what I wanted the AKG550 to be when I bought them. I'm happy.

CUSTOM Style allows you to change the look of your headphones at any time. 16 included design covers are only the beginning. Furthermore you can choose from different optional rings, additional design covers, ear- and headband pads available from Beyerdynamic. The Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro (what a name!) is a stunning looking headphone, and with its smaller size I can even see myself using it outside my house or office. The headphone sounds fairly balanced but there is the Beyer thing with the mids. On the other hand it’s no big surprise as this do kind of is the Beyer house sound. It wouldn’t compete for the best closed headphone award in general as this hardly is a strong analytical or revealing headphone with a huge sound stage but it would and does score extremely high in the fun category and “feeling the music”. The bass customization is really something useful and I think they will score big with this feature. Can this headphone do all genres? Yes of course, just take into account the V-shaped Beyer signature. If the Beyer house sound is something you like, then you will love this headphone for sure. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of the Beyer mids as you’ve noticed by now but this headphone is so addictive and sounds so fun that it is the only one I have used for the last 2 weeks… The face plates are very easy to change out. The whole process took me just a few minutes. DESIGN/BUILDThe star of the show here is the Custom sound slider - a slider on each earcup that lets you switch between four bass modes, depending on what you're listening to. Sorry for the long “looks” part but as this is one of the selling points of this Custom One Pro I found it important to talk about. Sound & Customisation Unfortunately it was Mike who tested the AKG K550 so I can’t compare it to that headphone immediately but I will try to add that later.

Beyerdynamic is a German company - relatively new to the UK - but with a long history in high-performance professional audio equipment. Now it's bringing this professional quality sound to consumers, something that - by the looks of it - we should be very excited about. The low-impedance Custom One Pro Plus is the successor to the Custom One Pro. A dynamic, closed-type headset, it is perfect as a mobile hi-fi headphone and as a monitor headphone for various studio applications. The most important distinguishing feature compared to its predecessor is its cable length – the ‘Plus’ refers in part to mobility – and this Beyerdynamic model gives the listener an approximately 1.5-metre long headset cable with one-button remote control. Customisable Headphones The drivers are 16ohm(!!) units (5-35000Hz) and they state the driver membranes are one of the lightest in the world, making it really precise and delivering a rapid audio performance available from all kind of (portable) sources (pro and consumer). This is a closed headphone and should produce 18db attenuation, I found it to isolate very well and I couldn’t hear any sound leaking when a friend was auditioning them. I find myself EQ'ing on the fly with the bass ports every time I switch between genres, even between different maps on Battlefield - it makes that much of a difference and it makes listening to music effortless especially when multitasking. For those of us who like to tinker (we all do - who are we kidding) this is soooooo much fun! While I'm sure there are better headphones out there, these will keep me happy for quite some time. They're versatile enough to give me a sense of awe when I'm listening to music, and it's very difficult to quantify that. The look of the COP's is meant to be one of the headphones selling points and they do have a distinctive look about them. The are not the best looking headphone but with the customisable plates and pads they can be made to look quite stylish. Beyerdynamic have released the COP's in several colours and my guess would be that they are trying to tempt the fashion headphone listening into buying something with a little more sound credibility.

The Custom One Pro is pretty light on accessories for a headphone pair in this price range, but the cable (which has no remote or mic for mobile phone use) is removable. This increases the overall value of the headphones tremendously, since you don't have to replace the whole system if the cable wears out or malfunctions. Besides the removable cable, you also get a 1/4-inch headphone adapter; there isn't even a cloth carrying pouch. The headband and ear pads are also removable and replaceable, however, which should add to the pair's longevity. These adjustments allow the sound of these headphones to suit a very wide spectrum of tastes. If you’re used to other consumer headphones, like Beats products, then positions 3 and 4 will offer the sort of thump you enjoy but with much more clarity.

Trusted ShopsImpedance is fairly flat, running between 17 and 27 ohms, and it varies only slightly with changes in the sound slider setting. Adding 70 ohms output impedance to the V-Can’s 5-ohm output impedance to simulate the effects of using a typical low-quality headphone amp boosts the bass by an average of +2 dB below 200 Hz. Gone is the bowling seat/instrument case material used for the DT770 ear cups. Most people won’t miss this… but uh, I like touching that plastic sometimes?
