The international success of Gavi should not be understated: according to the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi, of the approximately 13 million bottles of these Cortese-based white wines from south-eastern Piemonte, a staggering 85% are exported, with the UK, US, Germany and Japan being key markets.

Though known for its highly popular fresh, young wines, Gavi DOCG is also capable of producing bottles that benefit from time in the cellar. Broglia revealed that the wine’s creation came as a result of an appreciation for aged Gavi di Gavi: “My father and uncle decided to make Vecchia Annata because they used to enjoy drinking Bruno Broglia after many years.” As for the younger vintages tasted, Broglia cited the origins of the wine’s popularity and Genoa and suggested that they were “born to be paired with seafood”, such as spaghetti alle vongole.There are two main types of viral vector-based vaccines. Gavi di Gavi Riserva La Raia, biodynamic Gavi, 100% Cortese, low in sulphites, rich and textured, very smooth, layered and yet with the cutting acidity of good Gavi. Made with low yielding old vines of Cortese grapes from the south-east facing vineyard La Madonnina, cultivated organically/biodynamically. The wine ferments naturally in steel and spends a year maturing on the fine lees before bottling with no filtration. Its fine and full taste makes it a perfect accompaniment to fish, hors d’oeuvres and Pecorino cheese. Rich and expressive, Gavi La Raia show the potential of this grape and wine to raise above the mundane and become something more special and profound. It is so easy to drink too. We were brought to Osvaldo’s door by his fabulous Barolo Serra dei Turchi 2001. His house is in a small cluster of farm buildings on a small ridge between Alba and the hilltop village of La Morra called “Serra dei Turchi”. There was a Turkish encampment on this ridge centuries ago. We love the handmade quality of his wines.
