Description

Treatment for a urinary infection in cats is dependent on the cause of the infection. If the cause is believed to be a combination of factors, a combination of treatments may be used. Many of these will be longer-term management options to prevent a recurrence, rather than a short term fix.

N-acetyl D-glucosamine is a precursor to Chondroitin sulphate and Keratin sulphate which make up the Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer that lines and protects the sensitive bladder urothelium. A strong, resilient GAG layer prevents bacteria from adhering to the urothelial cells. When cats have cystitis it means that their bladders are inflamed. Providing fresh water regularly. Fresh, clean drinking water is essential for your cat and a water fountain is ideal as they like running water. They include: Hiding places Urinary specific supplements may help some cats. A 6-8 week trial will be sufficient time to see if they make a positive impact. They can be sprinkled onto food. Examples include: Cystophan, Cystaid Plus, VetPro Healthy Urinary Tract Function, Nutracys+ or Cystease. Clean litter trays. Providing an adequate number of clean litter trays (one more than the number of cats) with the litter the cats prefer, in quiet, safe areas of the house. i'll finally get to my question which is, does anyone have any experience of this, it's not classed as a medication but as a supplement, i asked if i could gradually wean him off of it and they didn't know, the vet said she hadn't used it herself and to ask the nurse who dispensed it, the nurse said to ask the vet...has anyone used this been able to wean their cat off, i really don't want Finn taking anything he doesn't need and he's only 2 years old, to take them for the rest of his life seems a very long time...i know i can read up online but i'd rather take advice from someone whos used it and knows exactly it works.
