Description

Our resources include a range of different family set-ups including: blended families, multiracial families, extended families, single-parent families, foster families, adoptive families, families with twins and different styles of families. Why is learning about all types of family important? Family types have changed over time. This is in keeping with changes in society where different types of families are more accepted. Here are some examples: Learning about different families is important for children as they may currently be experiencing one or more of these situations. It is important for children to know that each family is different and that there is not one 'normal' setup for a family to have. Children will learn about same-sex families, single-parent families, adoption, foster families and others. Although children may not experience each family setup personally, they may know someone who has this setup. They are more typical of post-industrial Western societies, but relatively egalitarian families exist outside of those countries as well. This type of family structure is becoming more and more common across the globe.

Extended family - grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, either all living nearby or within the same household. For example, if a married couple lives with either the husband or wife's parents the family changes from a nuclear to extended household. NARRATOR: Some kids have brothers and sisters, and some don't, but that's okay. There are lots of different types of families. Encourage your children to talk about their feelings: Talking about their feelings and emotions will help your children feel more connected to the family. This All Types of Family PowerPoint teaches children to understand and respect different family types, including blended families, multiracial families, extended families and single-parent families.

This book meets the criteria for diverse literature because it shows different types of families. No one family is alike, some have multiple children while some have two dads. I think that this book is diverse because it shows children that there are many different aspects to families and that just because their family is not the same as another does not mean that theirs is any worse or better. All families of any kind are good families. This bundle covers everything that you need to comprehensively cover the families and close positive relationships elements of the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study ( R1 - R9). The role that family structures play in society can hardly be overstated. Émile Durkheim, one of the most important theorists concerning the sociology of the family and sociology in general, thought that family structures served several vital functions in societies (Durkheim, 1888/2002). A conjugal or nuclear family is one of the most common in society. It comprises a married heterosexual couple and their young children living by themselves. The gender roles chosen in the book are different. Each family has a variety of both boys and girls who represent the children. There is a clear indication of types of gender suggested in facial features. Most of the animals are not dressed which indicates that just because an animal is wearing pants does not mean it has to be a boy. You might like to read our blog that discusses the importance of supporting inclusive family event days. These kinds of structures are rarer than patriarchal ones, but they have existed across history and continue to exist today. Others classify some egalitarian families as matriarchal (Lepowsky, 1993).
