But remnants of the old hotel may survive: a young clerk, Miss Yumiyoshi, relates her late-night encounter with an impenetrable darkness and musty smell on the 16th floor. Hear the Wind Sing” (1979) was the first appearance of an unnamed young man in his 20's living a lifestyle of no certain purpose, while “Pinball, 1973” (1980) and “A Wild Sheep Chase” (1982) were the ones that followed so as to meet him again a few years later in his life still puzzled and without the foggiest idea of reaching to a conclusion about his time on earth. His early novels were postmodern potboilers, detective stories with a philosophical bent, like 1982’s A Wild Sheep Chase and its 1988 sequel, Dance Dance Dance. I’m only halfway through, but the way the narrator is acting with Yuki almost feels like a grooming relationship. What follows is a bizarre tail-chase that deploys all the genre cliches of the hardboiled American thriller - beautiful, mysterious women, wisecracking detectives, paranoia, murder - with a deadpan, whisky-drinking narrator who has the gum of American popular culture so firmly stuck to his shoe that at times you have to do a double take to remind yourself that this is Tokyo rather than LA.

Which is why I’m really grateful to be able to make a living doing just that, why I feel it’s a blessing I’ve been able to live this kind of life. He and his wife had opened a jazz club in western Tokyo and found themselves unable to make a loan payment, when fate intervened: “We stumbled upon a crumpled wad of bills lying in the street. I’m deep in my revisiting/reading for the first time of Murakami’s catalogue, and I keep hitting up against something in revisiting my favorites that I either glossed over or just chose to ignore the first time through, and it’s bugging me.

Nevertheless, our anonymous protagonist, now 35, is very close of finding a way out from his struggles. Novelist as a Vocation, in this way, is like so many of his novels, and it hinges on a trick at which Murakami is well practiced: the promise of revelation that turns out to be a disappearing act. While Murakami eventually moves on from stories about private investigators, most of his body of work involves mystery in some fashion. Showboat Medical Examiner Margot Heavner makes it clear that, breaking with her department’s earlier practice ( The Bone Collection, 2016, etc.

The officers know he did not kill her but keep playing mind games with him for three days, certain that he is hiding something. Later, he is woken in the night by Yumiyoshi, who has discovered their whole room is now in the other realm. She jokes that this is a science-fiction premise, then carries on with the business of being a character in a novel.
