And of course, no holiday to Fife would be complete without a spectacular boat trip to the breathtaking Isle of May National Nature Reserve from neighbouring Anstruther.

There is a wealth of wildlife to see in the country. Highlights include sea eagles and whales from the Isle of Mull, ospreys around Loch Garten, puffins on the Isle of May and bottle nosed dolphins in the Moray Firth. This approach has its challenges – not least finding that blissful spot. Suitable stopover points are limited and the best ones are well documented – so you may find yourselves having to drive around for a while in search of The One. It’s worth bearing in mind, too, that a layby that seems quiet when you park up may in fact see a fair amount of traffic later on, and there’s nothing to stop several more vans parking up right alongside you (sure you wouldn’t rather be on a spacious pitch within a peaceful caravan park?)

Edinburgh is the country’s capital and second largest city (Glasgow being the largest) and was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses in Europe. Today there’s plenty to do in and around Edinburgh. Uniquely placed on the northern shores of Loch Linne, this touring park truly makes the most of Scotland’s natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy ethereal views of the water and surrounding mountains from their pitch, venture out on a guided mountain walk or even scale the mighty Ben Nevis nearby.

Or just keep heading north… our options stretch all the way up to John O’Groats and beyond.

Looking for somewhere to pitch up? Here are a few great places to camp in Scotland: Fort William and Glen Nevis If you prefer a theme to your hols, several fine ones suggest themselves. Outdoor types might like to set themselves a munro-bagging challenge (that’s conquering Scotland’s peaks over 3000 feet… although you may need a few trips to get up all 282 of them) or taking a tour of the many gorgeous golf courses around the country. Or how about a scenic road trip on the famed North Coast 500 (or the lesser-known but equally splendid Argyll Coastal Route or North East 250), or a little jaunt around the Malt Whisky Trail?
