But the truth is, I was in a bad place and I didn’t rate myself enough to say no to just a bit of attention.

grace details the essence of what it is to be a woman in today’s world and made you feel that little bit less alone.A really enjoyable read overall though, exactly what I needed as a break from some of the other heavier political / thriller genres I am reading alongside. I went into this book blind, not knowing who Grace Campbell was and her links to politics, her father being Alastair Campbell. As a self-proclaimed “book about shame”, I think there are relatable topics in this book for most people, especially women. I found the book interesting when she had written about him working in politics and the whole Tony Blair side of things, the protesting outside their home which was aimed at Alastair (sometimes you don’t realise what comes with being known or in the public eye if you will).

What I admire the most about Grace Campbell is that there’s no hiding behind a performance for her readers: her life is her literal material and she delves into it with a bravery that has me shook. But I now think that's because I had a harder time relating to (dis)Grace in her younger teenage years (be it because of difference in personal experiences, societal, cultural. p. 23) and then goes onto highlight every instance of this disgraced PM’s attempts to derail her childhood.Other chapters are revelatory about the darkness, self-loathing and self-sabotage that risked defining her twenties. Whilst I can't relate to Grace's experiences with drugs (I'm very anti-drugs), there were parts that I felt echoed my own teenage and early-20s and the insecurities I harboured. Booklist (starred review): "Amazing Disgrace is written as if Samper is chatting with the reader over a bottle of prosecco, and it offers endless (often laugh-out-loud) musings from the scatological to the sartorial.
