The emo revival may have repudiated most of the aesthetic qualities of its preceding “hair metal” period, but the inextricable relationship with social media was kept intact. MySpace remained a crucial hub for networking and touring information, while makeshift punk blogs, message boards, and Tumblr served as mp3 trading stations and hype incubators. A leak of Joyce Manor’s debut had virtually attained “instant classic” status by the time it was released in January 2011, and frontman Barry Johnson attributed its success to “16-year-old and 17-year-old girls, with septum piercings and green hair”—a demographic fluent in Tumblr and so alienated in high school that they could view the miserable one-night stand outlined so quotably in “Constant Headache” as aspirational. But that is a truly emotional band that everyone should experience, regardless of what you like. I would say less, but because he’s so popular, they do. A lot of the rap stuff is searched, which I love. Actually, I didn’t tell you this earlier, about Is This Band Emo. Because we built it in a weekend, it’s not as fleshed out as I would’ve liked. What I wanted was that if you searched for a band and it said it wasn’t emo, it would recommend one that was. “Hey, Drake [isn’t emo]. Try Mineral.” Not that I was surprised but obviously a little bummed emo didn't really get repped in the Rolling Stones' recent best singers list. What’s the most obscure thing I might find? Let’s hop on to the world of wordplay with our emo jokes and puns, designed to entertain and bring a dash of emo flair to your day. The only thing I can relate it to is hair metal. I love metal. I got into it early on. I love Iron Maiden. I love Death, Strapping Young Lad, At The Gates. It’s just that the hair-metal part is where people took it as this joke. It’s seen as this separate moment, right? The Wingers, the Warrants, the Poisons—it had this cool moment. Then obviously, Nirvana and all those bands blew it up. But metal is still around.
