The first book is more of a lower steam, fluffy romance with the following books in the series having higher stakes and a lot more spice.How was I supposed to know that the incantations scrawled inside of it worked? That the first one I read would open a portal into a demon plane — or that the next one was an unbreakable vow to the seven foot tall shadow monster I unwittingly summoned into my bedroom? Ugh what a let down. Had so much potential and I thought a great build up. The protagonist was kind of a selfish asshat, but she was tolerable because Malphas was so endearing. I was even able to tolerate the fated mates trope because of the intriguing world building and mystery. I’ll just say that I would have rated this much higher and been a lot more generous with praise if the author didn’t write a nonexistent and unsatisfying climax. Also, she never earned him. She didn’t deserve him and no last minute “rescues” will make up for her being a disappointing human being. The reason for my lower rating is because the heroine was a tad disappointing. She accidentally summons the demon, and I would have preferred she be afraid of him, or maybe not believe that he’s her mate for longer. Her rationale for not wanting to be with him wasn’t very logical, and it was kind of mean. He was immediately devoted to her and incredibly sweet, and she was having none of that. I would have preferred for the external obstacles to have been a bigger deal instead of the entire book being about her not wanting to accept that he’s her mate without better reasoning for it. First and last time reading Sarah spade lmao. Descriptions are great but miss girl can not write xxx scenes for shi. We spend all book with this girl summoning a damn demon for... ????? No clue. Nothing happens.
