TopSpec Linseed Mash is designed to be fed with any TopSpec feed balancer or an appropriate TopSpec supplement as it does not contain any added vitamins or trace-elements. This combination can be mixed with any other horse feed including alfalfa/grass chops. One of the ways in which TopSpec Linseed Mash is superior to most straights however, is that it is supplemented with the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium. The fatty acids in cell membranes can be released and transformed into chemical messengers such as prostaglandins and thromboxanes. TopSpec Linseed Mash is a highly palatable mash which combines the best of traditional knowledge with modern technology. Rich in linseed and oatbran this mash contains just 12% starch yet the scattering of flaked maize and flaked peas lends a mix-like appearance to this flavoursome mash. You will need to feed a good quality balancer. I would recommend TopSpec Comprehensive or D&H Ultimate - both are excellent. The amount you feed will need to be weighed (I recommend weighing and then marking how much this is on a cup so you don't have the faff of weighing every day). If micronized linseed is fed in larger amounts to horses then because it is high in oil it will provide a higher level of energy (calories) and so is useful for promoting weight gain. Oil is a source of slow release energy and so shouldn’t result in over-excitable behaviour.

Micronized linseed has become a popular feed for horses. Fifty years ago, linseed for horses was in the form of a linseed mash and horse owners had to boil it for hours themselves. Today, micronized linseed is a much more convenient option and it can be fed as a straight or included in horse feed as an ingredient. But what is linseed and why is it so popular?Topspec Linseed Mash should be soaked in cool or warm water for at least 5 minutes prior to feeding with equal parts of water to mash. Contains the all-important muco-polysaccharides. Oatbran provides good levels of super-fibres and has been proven to be sympathetic to the horse’s digestive system. The main benefit of micronized linseed for horses is as a source of omega 3 fatty acids. If you would like more information about what omega 3 fatty acids actually are then there is some extra information below. What you need to know about their importance to the horse is that they help counteract the higher levels of omega 6 in many horse’s diets brought about by feeding cereals found in mixes and cubes. I also liked purefeeds mix and nuts and they told me if he needed more condition to add speedibeet and micronised linseed

Ok, before I start, I have managed high end luxury livery yards and rehab yards for a long time. I have worked extremely closely with a veterinary nutritionist (a fully qualified, practicing vet, who dedicates three days a week purely to educating people about equine nutrition). We worked out a dietary plan for every rehab case on the yard, down to the last gram, and I have seen this work extremely well countless times.

Topspec Linseed Mash is a highly palatable mash which combines the best of traditional knowledge with modern technology. Essential fatty acids are often referred to as omega 3 or omega 6. The number refers to the position of the first double bond in the chain; omega 3s have the double bond linked to the third carbon atom whereas in omega 6 it is linked to the 6th carbon atom. Topspec Linseed Mash is designed to be fed with any TopSpec feed balancer or an appropriate Topspec supplement as it does not contain any added vitamins or trace-elements. TopSpec Linseed Mash should be soaked in cool or warm water for 5 minutes prior to feeding, with equal parts of dry mash to water. This combination can be mixed with any other horse feed including alfalfa/grass chops. One of the ways in which Topspec Linseed Mash is superior to most straights however, is that it is supplemented with the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium.

Linseed Mash is designed to be fed with any TopSpec Feed Balancer or an appropriate TopSpec supplement as it does not contain any added vitamins or trace-elements. It is supplemented with the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium. I would put them both on Alfa A Oil (don't worry, this is safe for EMS horses!), and some linseed oil as an additive. No more than 90ml of the linseed oil initially. For the horse who needs more weight, you could add some micronised linseed when they drop weight - but again, this needs to be calculated on weight. If you need a joint supplement the only one that is actually proven to work and peer reviewed by vets is Naf Superflex Senior. All of this is safe for EMS horses or those prone to laminitis. I promise - I have fed this for years to such horses. Cell membranes contain fatty acids and it tends to follow that the proportions of fatty acids consumed in the diet are incorporated into cell membranes in the same ratios. Mashes are very useful for hydrating horses and volumising their feed. Linseed Mash combines the best of traditional knowledge with modern technology. Rich in linseed and oatbran this mash contains just 11% starch yet the scattering of flaked maize and flaked peas lends a mix-like appearance to this irresistible mash. Discovering why your horse is underweight can be difficult, but the more you know about your horse’s current diet, his worming programme, dental history and hoof quality, as well as basic information such as his height and age, the more chance you have of identifying the issue. The Mash is rich in linseed and oat bran and it contains just 12% starch yet the scattering of flaked maize and flaked peas lends a mix-like appearance to this flavoursome mash. TopSpec Linseed Mash is a blend of conditioning ingredients, with an emphasis on linseed providing substantial levels of oil and protein and including the all-important muco-polysaccharides. Oatbran provides good levels of super-fibres and has been proven to be sympathetic to the horse’s digestive system. If omega 6 are converted to these substances they create pro-inflammatory prostaglandins whereas omega 3 create anti-inflammatory ones. My horse looked fantastic on topspec fibre plus cubes along with senior balancer, he put weight on in about a month, unfortunately he was a fussy sod and went off it after 18 months was gutted. He loved to give me problems finding feed he would eat, think we tried them all.

The typical ingredients in TopSpec Linseed Mash are soya hulls (GM), full fat linseed, linseed expeller, unmolassed beet pulp, grass, high fibre oat-by product, micronised flaked maize, oat bran flakes, wheatbran, molasses, micronised flaked peas, wheatfeed, mineral premix. TopSpec Linseed Mash should be soaked in cool or warm water for at least 5 minutes prior to feeding with equal parts of water to mash. Top spec and D&H are not good balancers. Their spec is not ideal. Advising feeding a good doer EMS horse/pony with alfa oil and then saracens recovery mash is asking for trouble! It’s important to get to the root cause of the problem so you can obtain accurate advice. Older horses are less efficient at digesting their food, a horse suffering from dental issues may be finding it uncomfortable to chew, while poor hooves and a dull coat can be an indication of gut issues,” says Katie Williams, technical and product development manager at Dengie.Linseed is often grouped with other “oilseeds” such as rape which is a brassica and soya which is a legume. Although from different plant families, all produce seeds from which useful “vegetable” oils can be extracted; linseed oil benefits include good levels of omega 3 fatty acids in a concentrated form which produces exceptional coat shine. In the case of both linseed and soya, the whole seed or bean can be micronized which is a form of cooking that makes them more digestible for the horse. Soya is often flaked and used in mixes to provide a high oil feed ingredient and both linseed and soya can be ground to produce a meal which is often included in cubes. Linseed meal is also a popular straight feed that can be added to the feed separately. Essential fatty acids include chains of carbon atoms joined together; long chains contain 12 or more carbon atoms.
