You can look for brands that are on the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association list of certified changing tables, meaning it's been validated by a reputable third party. This Delta Children changing table that has guardrails on all four sides is an example of a stand-alone changing station with safety features built in. Storkcraft and many other furniture brands sell dressers with removable changing tops, such as this Brookside 2 Drawer Changing Table. Of course, since these are not reusable, they are not an eco-friendly or long-lasting option. But for out-and-about emergencies or once-in-a-blue-moon trips like visiting Disney World, having these can feel like a lifesaver. Since diapering requires a lot of accessories, you might also want to have a diaper pail to hold discarded diapers and an organizer to keep your wipes and creams at hand. We've also ranked some favorite diaper brands and the best-performing diaper rash creams, along with the best diaper bags so you can take your show on the road. We also asked writer Becca Heyes to test a selection of changing bags and let us know her thoughts. As a mum to a boisterous two-year-old and a three-month-old baby, Becca was able to offer insight into what makes a really great changing bag that will grow with a family and last for years to come. Over the course of three months, Becca rigorously tested a shortlist of 15 bags before narrowing them down to favourites, some of which we included on this list. We combined all of this research to choose a selection of products that we think offer something for everybody. How we tested:

The spill test: We spilt a small amount of milk onto each bag, both inside and out (something that’s sure to happen in the lifetime of any changing bag), then cleaned them up as best we could. We assessed how easily the bag was able to be wiped clean and whether there were any stains or smells left behind. Waterproof material: Sometimes babies give you an extra surprise and pee on everything before you’ve had a chance to load a new diaper. Having a waterproof changing surface and a machine washable cover can save you from a lot of extra clean-up. That said: Always keep a hand on your baby. Never leave a child unattended on a dressing table, even for a moment, and even if they are strapped.

Foldable– You want something easy to fold up and still compact. It’s hard to fit everything a baby needs into a changing mat, without needing to place a large mat too. The easier and smaller it folds away, the better. Place bear’s arms around your little one and kneel on the kneepads to stop babies from flipping or crawling With wipeable material, padding to support the baby's head and provide cushioning from hard surfaces, and high sides to stop baby from rolling off (and, of course, all the cute designs!), we honestly can't think of a better option. You can easily roll it up and put it in your changing bag and reuse it time and time again when you are visiting the swimming pool. It’s easily wipeable and will keep in good condition. I also like that you can get matching swimsuits from the Splash About range. I bought the swimming costume for my baby and they are of great quality with a range of fun designs. Review the material used to make the changing pad. Not only do you want to make sure the pad is constructed using non-toxic materials that are safe up against the baby’s skin, but you’ll also want to make sure the pad is waterproof.

With foldable, portable and wedge options, choosing the best changing mats can take time too. Not to mention all of the different colours and designs to try and match up this must-have nursery accessory to your décor and changing table unit! Ideally, it's much safer to change your baby on the floor, as they don't have anywhere to fall. However, if you are planning on using a baby changing unit, we recommend purchasing a wedged baby changing mat (or an anti-roll baby changing mat) to prevent them from wriggling or hitting their head. Yes, you can use a changing pad cover or waterproof sheets on your changing pad. It helps keep the pad clean but also creates a soft and comfortable surface against your baby’s delicate skin. If you’re short on space and have opted out of using a changing table, this pad may be the best solution. With its four raised sides, you don’t need a table, as this will fully cover any surface. When you’re done with it, you can simply stash it in a closet. I would say that my baby doesn’t fit on it properly now she is over a year, so it’s a shame it doesn’t grow with your baby. Also, another downfall of this portable changing mat is that the material could be more comfortable for your child.

Do I really need a changing bag?

For portable pads: Wipe down with an antibacterial wipe or a wet cloth and a little bleach, and air dry it in the sun. Avoid putting in the washing machine, especially if most of the material is synthetic. Non-skid bottoms: Babies are wiggly creatures, which can be dangerous if they’re being changed on a higher surface. Consider a changing pad with a non-skid base, especially if your changing pad doesn’t include a safety belt.
