Credit to Eric Bobo, who’d come from the Beastie Boys on tour with us as live percussionist – fortunately, it worked. If there is a more brutal diss track than No Rest For The Wicked (wherein Cypress Hill give Ice Cube a verbal slapping for (allegedly) stealing one of their hooks), we would love to hear it. Eschewing the quirky, sing-song style of Black Sunday in favour of a darker, moodier approach, DJ Muggs' wild imagination blossomed in real time. Even when the craziness reaches a fever pitch, the songs are always grounded in Muggs’ rock-solid rhythms.

I never wanted to do what other hip-hop acts were doing, but also [his bandmate] Sen Dog and myself have sisters and we wouldn’t want them to be talked to that way. Awash with esoteric samples, collected by Muggs on his travels, songs like first single Band Of Gypsies and the hazy, tripped-out Jesus Was A Stoner owed as much to the outer limits of psychedelic rock as they did to traditional hip-hop. The two remixes are amongst Cypress’ biggest catalogue tracks, “Insane In The Brain” by veteran DJ/Producer Statik Selektah and “Hits From The Bong” by none other than DJ Muggs himself. On the rap-only first disc, Eminem pops up on (Rap) Superstar and the copycat-dissing Stank Ass Hoe is as funky and obnoxious as it sounds. All tracks are written by Lawrence Muggerud, Louis Freese, and Senen Reyes, except track 2, written by Muggerud, Freese, and Todd Ray. In addition to the brand new tracks, there is a new to DSPs remix of “Lick A Shot” by Baka Boyz, the Spanish version of “Insane in the Brain,” dubbed “Loco En El Coco,” and rarity “Scooby Doo. Plenty of people had written songs about huffing ganja before, but never with this much enthusiasm or with such dedication.

Track 2 contains elements from "The Wizard" (Iommi/Butler/Ward/Osbourne) published by Essex Music International, Inc. A double-disc deal, with one album dedicated to full-bore LA hip-hop and the other to raucous rap-rock, it captures a feverish creative moment in time. While there’s nothing quite as exquisitely ominous as EOA’s Loco, Warlord or Insane OG here, it’s equally true that their last record didn’t have anything as triumphant-sounding as Break Of Dawn. MCs B-Real and Sen Dog are the perennial party-starting stoner sages; DJ Muggs is a maverick sonic magician, conjuring all kinds of weird and wonderful backdrops and funky beats. The group’s chemistry peaks on “When the Shit Goes Down” and the immortal “Insane in the Brain,” two hit anthems that exemplify the trio’s strength. The full line-up for Boomtown 2023 – Chapter Two: The Twin Trail – is here, and it includes The Prodigy, Cypress Hill and loads more. Like the open road for Springsteen, it remains an inextinguishable creative spark in their artistic consciousness. The ‘90s was an insanely fruitful decade for rap music, but this still stands out as a unique and subtly revolutionary piece of work. Track 8 contains elements from "Ode To Billy Joe" by Bobbie Gentry (ASCAP), performed by Lou Donaldson courtesy of Blue Note Records, a division of Capitol Records, Inc. The tone is set by “I Wanna Get High,” in which DJ Muggs blends samples from three different songs and creates a sound that evokes billows of smoke.
