Description

How you choose to use your garden is entirely up to you but these are some suggestions. First and foremost in the modern world it should be an enjoyable space to be in. Whether you have a few herbs on a windowsill or a large garden you should enjoy being there and tending to your plants. The aromas from many plants really help with this.

Since 1928, when the Society instituted the first postgraduate qualification in Midwifery (the Mastery of Midwifery, MMSA), the Apothecaries have pioneered 15 further such diplomas in specialist subjects not offered by the Universities, Medical Royal Colleges or any other medical body. This includes the diploma in the Forensic and Clinical Aspects of Sexual Assault (2009–14), the administration of which was taken up by the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine [7] in 2014. Monks used sage to cleanse the body and whiten the teeth, while betony appeared in a whole range of cures. They used comfrey, or knitbone, to help heal wounds and even set broken bones (English Heritage 2016). The Physic Garden a b Stungo, Ruth (1993). At least 80% of the membership of the Society are required to be medical practitioners, and at least 85% must be medically qualified or registered pharmacists. In fact, the membership is predominantly made up of prominent physicians (rather than surgeons who, for historical reasons, are more likely to be members of the Barbers' Company). The Hall's appearance has altered little since even though it saw renovation in the 1980s. Due to its historical holdings, the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries is a member of The London Museums of Health & Medicine group. Parts of the garden have been lost to road development – the river bank during 1874 construction of the Chelsea Embankment on the north bank of the River Thames, and a strip of the garden to allow widening of Royal Hospital Road. What remains is a 3.5 acres (1.4ha) patch in the heart of London. [6] You could find botanical gardens across Old-Regime France. Louis XIV issued an edict in 1707 “that each medical faculty was to have a professor of botany and an associated botanical garden” (McClellan 2004: 73). A favourite herbaceous layer combination is the Native American idea known as the three sisters, which combines sweetcorn, beans and squash. The beans climb up the corn stems as they grow, fixing nitrogen at the roots, and then the large squash leaves curl around the bases and keep other plants and weeds at bay. Herbal helpers Herbalism as a discipline is probably as old as humanity. We still commonly use some of the practices today. The Society of Apothecaries is perhaps best known generally for its foundation in 1673 of the Chelsea Physic Garden, London, one of Europe's oldest botanical gardens and the second oldest in Britain. [13] After Sir Hans Sloane granted the society rights to the manor of Chelsea, the four-acre (16,000m²) garden became the richest collection of medicinal plants in Europe under the direction of Philip Miller. Its seed exchange programme, originally initiated with the Leiden Botanical Garden, led to cotton being planted for the first time in the Colony of Georgia. When the General Medical Council was established by statute in 1858, the LSA became a registrable qualification. From 1885, the examination included surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, which were required by law following the Medical Act of 1886, and in 1907 the title was altered by parliamentary act to LMSSA to reflect this. The Society ceased to be recognised by the General Medical Council as a provider of primary medical qualifications in 2008, although it had rarely issued any licences since 1999, the year the United Examining Board was abolished. About - Chelsea Physic Garden

Sue Minter explains that the Chelsea Physic Garden also helped to legitimise the apothecaries as “a reputable medical body” during the seventeenth century, a period in which they faced stiff competition from the physicians (2003: 3). At the time, physicians diagnosed illnesses and wrote prescriptions. The apothecaries dispensed those prescriptions from their shops, which would later become pharmacies. Surgeons carried out the exact role you imagine they would (Jones 2006: 232).

History - Chelsea Physic Garden

There’s something about the concept of a poison garden that either titillates or terrifies, depending on your preferences. The use of the term 'Society' rather than the usual 'Company' is purely traditional, though – the charter and grant themselves use both terms, as do grants to other City companies (including the Bowyers, Framework Knitters and Fanmakers). Sir Joseph Banks worked with the head gardener and curator John Fairbairn during the 1780–1814 period. Fairbairn specialized in growing and cultivating plants from around the world.Sue Minter explains that the Chelsea Physic Garden also helped to legitimise the apothecaries as “a reputable medical body” during the seventeenth century, a period in which they faced stiff competition from the physicians. This is vital to the development of medicine as a practice. Beware What You Touch… Make no mistake that these apothecary gardens are filled only with safe or pleasant healing plants. At the Chelsea Physic Garden, you’ll also find their poisonous cousins lurking within this gorgeous green oasis. Deadly nightshade, larkspur, monkshood, and mandrake rub shoulders with periwinkles, campanula, and peonies.
