There is a hard to belief twist (IMO), like how Rachel's lover was also accused of a heinous crime. Rachel, the heroine, was well-drawn and sympathetic without being goody-goody or perfect - a normal, slightly irresponsible 19-year-old girl who finds herself accused of a terrible crime, and comes face to face with all the prejudices and tabloid media unfairness that come with being an attractive young girl who has not yet found her adult self and who os suddenly accused of being a murderer. Though I had the ending figured out early on, it was one of those books where the journey to that ending was suspenseful, fun and logical. Though there were other red herrings and possibilities for both the old and the new murder, the ending and resolution to each crime was satisfying and I wouldn’t have wanted to see it end any other way. What I had forgotten most of all was how quiet a crime scene is. No breath but yours. The faint breeze that stirs over lifeless hair and clothes. The glassy, open emptiness of dead eyes. It’s almost peaceful, a violent death, before they come in with heavy boots and tape and cameras. Before it becomes a story, out there in the world for people to read. Before it’s something that happened to you. a b Bates, James (March 7, 1998). "Miramax Wins 'Scream' Claim Against Sony". Los Angeles Times . Retrieved April 7, 2018. After that, we’re off and running through a pacy plot offering plenty of potential killer-candidates, before the gang’s focus narrows to one seeming impossibility, and inventive deaths (I’d avert your eyes from Coach Eric – you’ll know when). There are plenty of blood and guts besides (we begin with a dripping goat head in a wardrobe and escalate rapidly from there), and a lightly-S&M relationship between Allison and Lennon’s father and the local police chief that, given the number of secrets the former is carrying about his daughters, would seem ill-advised.

The beginning of the novel was a little slow paced and felt dragged on. The main mystery plot of the story started to roll halfway through the novel. But the second half of the book was quite enjoyable. The characters involved were easy to decipher and it was clear what their personality traits and their role in the plot was. During the second half of the novel there were several unexpected plot points thrown in [they were small plot points but added flair to the story], especially in the last couple chapters. A number of plot points were predictable, but I would say there was a wonderful balance of predicable and unpredictable. The writing in the book wasn’t amazing, it was very simple and would be easy to understand for a younger audience. I liked how the author incorporated music into the book without making it the central plotline. The relationships between some of the characters were quite stereotypical but fortunately it was well done. The entire novel was written in first person from the perspective of Ruby Marshall. The adults were very present in the story which is quite unusual so that was nice. Overall, I enjoyed the book and liked many of the characters such as Georgia, Euan and Mara. Started out great, you can tell the author works in a school but sometimes it leaned over too far into the cultural references. But after about a dozen of them, I kind of started to wish I never had to read another thriller, ever again. Welcome to the reality game show that'll scare you to death! Have you got what it takes to last the night?

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. 2008 [1997]. ASIN B0018CWWAU. Rachel thinks her life has started to come together, she lives in the countryside and has a boyfriend she loves albeit he is separated from his wife and has a small child. One morning on her regular walks with her dog she spots a body. What does she do? She runs it is the wife of her boyfriend. Should she report it? Well she has her reasons, 20 years ago when she was known as Casey she decided to fly to Los Angeles to become a Nanny thinking it was a stepping stone to fame. Rachel goes about her regular routine by clipping the leash to her dog and heading for the nearby park early in the morning. Not a soul about. But she's mistaken. She spots a coat on the ground in the distance that looks like it was carelessly abandoned by its owner. As she draws near, she sees a slender hand poking out of the sleeve and those dead vacant eyes are a giveaway. I have a couple of Sue Wallman books on my shelf, but my husband bought me this one for my birthday... Why haven't I read any of her books before?! It was so easy to fall into the narrative of Ruby, a teenage girl with a dark secret, starting at a new school, when two of her class mates are murdered, and she's one of the last people to see them both alive...
