We are committed to protecting your privacy and we will always treat your personal information with respect and promise to keep it safe. If it is used in a food product the manufacturer must list and emphasise the word ‘barley’ in the ingredients list in line with European allergen labelling law. so, through degradation and dilution, the end result is that malt vinegar contains very little, or possibly no, gluten. com (I encourage you to read this message board thread, because it gives you a great idea of how frustrated and confused other celiacs can become over what we thought was a black/white issue suddenly becoming very gray).

The labels will be on the bottles and if you have any additional questions please feel free to contact us.

We want them to label these products gluten free to show they are committed to gluten free law and to make it easier for consumers to accurately check if a product is gluten free.

One of the reasons distilled vinegar has caused confusion is that it is made from distilled alcohol which may be made from a gluten-containing grain. Thanks Jen for saying you think about these things too, I was starting to wonder how to get rid of those "voices" in my head! However, flavored varieties or those mixed with other ingredients should be checked for potential gluten content. The exception to this rule is malt vinegar, which is not distilled, and therefore is not safe to consume. Malt vinegar is not gluten free because it is made using barley malt and it is a fermented rather than a distilled product. Because it’s used in very small quantities, the end product usually contains 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten or less, meaning it can be legally labelled gluten free. Then reading an article on food analysis, I realized it was quite possible glutens in the vinegar may have upset her.

gluten-free is a big seller these days here, and some people are more interested in profit than details. Anyway, as far as vinegar goes I just switched to cider, balsamic or wine vinegar and don't miss malt really at all.the gluten-free food checker APP says it's OK and so does Coeliac UK, but many sites say avoid at all costs!
