Additionally, jenever can still be made from other non-grain base spirits. Meanwhile, those only produced from grain and malt can be labelled as Graanjenever.

The maltwine is then re-distilled in the “Distilleerderij” (Distillery) in combination with Juniper berries and other botanicals into Genever. Dutch entrepreneurs and brothers Noah Duijst and Siward de Groot, who have extensive experience in the wine and spirits industry, are behind the acquisition. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The origin of jenever (also spelled genever) is the subject of much debate, but it’s believed the spirit – originally a combination of distilled malt wine and juniper berries – was originally developed for medicinal use in the 16th century somewhere in the Netherlands, where it remains the country’s national drink. Dutch gin is a spirit made from juniper berries and other botanicals, such as coriander, cardamom, angelica root, cinnamon, ginger, licorice root, lemon peel, and orange peel. These ingredients are steeped in alcohol before being distilled into clear liquid form. The result is a strong-tasting spirit with notes of juniper berries and other spices. Meanwhile, oude jenever is often appreciated like whisky where it is served at room temperature in a copita nosing glass.

Different Jenever Types & How They Taste

Nowadays, jenever is served from the freezer like vodka. However, jonge jenever used to be drunk at room temperature with sugar and a spoon similar to absinthe. Made by historic London wine merchants Berry Bros. & Rudd, the six-botanical spirit took two years to develop with Dr David Clutton – a man who holds a PhD in gin (yep, that exists). It was worth the effort. Welch A, Caramanica K, Maslow C, et al. Frequent binge drinking five to six years after exposure to 9/11: Findings from the World Trade Center Health Registry.
