By design, i would never buy a product, which full functionality would require the matching Android or iOS App - because it's being pretty clear, that someday, on day x, the firm would cancel all the support - after a couple years. So then you'd have just like rubbish for the wastebin. While the larger ingest was part user failure, part wishlist items, the smaller sessions have been flawless. As it boots up, you’ll see a loading bar below the GNARBOX logo, and once it’s ready, you’ll be able to ingest your card via the apps on your phone or tablet.

However, the same cannot be said about the mobile apps, which seem to be the Achilles’ heel of the otherwise excellent hardware. The “Safekeep” and “Selects” apps look half-baked and a lot of the functionality seems to be missing at the moment. The Gnarbox team is working hard on delivering new features and updates to the apps, but it will take some time to deliver them to the end users. I would love to see more polished versions of these apps in the near future, and I hope that the company will continue to listen to their customers. However, one of the really amazing things that I’ve since discovered is that with the new iPads, the GNABOX will connect directly to the iPad to allow you to pull files directly from it and into Lightroom without any additional steps, which is amazing! It’s something I’m excited to work with moving forward.

gonzalu - a "waterproof" SD card is sealed to prevent incursion of water into the card's internals. Top photo shows person inserting/removing an SD card in pouring rain, just about the stupidest thing you could do, and virtually guaranteed to corrupt the card. Not much point in having a weather-sealed SSD if you corrupt the card while inserting it! Apple regularly removes old software from their app store, while simultaneously creating a monopoly in which you can't install software from anywhere else. While you might be thinking, “This has been done before,” where the GNARBOX transcends what’s on the market is with its portability and on-board features, making it possible to travel without a laptop and still work on files.I’m happy to report the mini bath was a success, though I wouldn’t necessarily encourage anyone else to toss their GNARBOX into a waterfall puddle on purpose to see what happens. Consider that test already taken care of! And it doesn’t end there. With the pandemic keeping him home over the last year, Shron turned his attention to another project that he says has been on his mind since he was a kid: Creating a model of the Kingston Subdivision railroad that runs from Toronto to Montreal. If you use Andriod device, just upgrade your phone for a water-resisitant, usb-c 3.1, 256G+ andriod phone, and a usbc card reader, which does a much better job. Obviously, it is not fair to compare what one can do in phone software vs full-featured desktop software, but that’s another reason why I personally don’t edit anything on my phone. If I were to edit on an iPad or a laptop, I know that I could get pretty similar results as the above using Lightroom.

Jon Salmon's short film Fudgie Freddie follows a struggling animator starting to transform into his most popular character, an ice cream cone named Fudgie Freddie. The practical effects and use of a single character created a simple and inexpensive story to pitch Salmon's idea for a feature is something any and every filmmaker can do. Basically I want to spend very little and get perfect 10-bit video "photo" quality without compression artifacts. Is that too much to ask??? ;) Our photography team at Lin & Jirsa Photography consists of dozens of shooters, and we take GNARBOX units with us to all of our weddings, no matter how large or small the event. Preserving our files is equally important for every job. We’ve previously shared data management tips for multi-shooter studios like ours, and GNARBOX plays a significant role in our data management workflow. Utilizing an ingenious physical design, the ribbed surface is aesthetically pleasing, but also allows for more surface area, which assists in heat dissipation.A light tap on the right button will wake up the device to let you know the battery life, and a longer press will turn it on. Therein lies the major issue. Without the app, while somewhat functional, the device fails to offer its promised features. Companies go out of business and products lose customer support, but not all products lose core functionality when the manufacturer vanishes.

They took me up on the challenge, and I whole heartedly believed I would wind up finding a way to unintentionally take this hard drive down. Unlike the original Gnarbox that was plagued with performance issues (which ended up being the primary reason for me immediately dropping it from my workflow), the performance of the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD is significantly better. To be honest, it is not even a comparison! The original Gnarbox was so painfully slow, that it took me a whopping 45 minutes just to transfer 53 GB of RAW images from a memory card (see my Gnarbox review for more details). When not in the field, users can connect the LamboGo directly to a computer with transfer speeds the company claims can reach up to 2,400 MB/s. It’s not clear if the connection is standard USB-C or if it’s Thunderbolt, as LamboTech does not specify, though one of the items that the company offers as a bundle is a Thunderbolt cable. I didn’t notice until after it loaded, and then when I tried to fix it, it uploaded not only the missed files, but also the ones that had originally been uploaded.

A big part of success of any product, is how well it performs when it comes to operating it via software. Operating systems, firmware and user interfaces matter, especially on something that claims to be able to replace a laptop. Unfortunately, I encountered a number of issues when using the Gnarbox app on my iPhone X. They are not critical in nature, but still worth pointing out. First of all, the iOS app is not compatible with all iOS devices. It was pretty clear that the software was not designed to be used on the iPhone X, so I experienced a number of problems when navigating through the software, as shown below: Additionally, there are subtle feet at the base of the GNARBOX that gives just enough space below the device to allow for air flow and heat management. One of the things I wish was a little simpler was the app system. Instead of having two apps – one app for ingesting and one for culling – I’d love to see it become a one stop shop.
