Description

It's great to see POCO bring a 90Hz panel to the budget segment, and like most of its devices, there's dynamic refresh to maximize battery life. Based on the content that's being viewed on the screen, the M3 Pro dynamically switches to 90Hz, 60Hz, and 50Hz, with an upcoming software update bringing 30Hz. The Dimensity 700 is a very interesting platform because it delivers much better performance than the Snapdragon 662-toting M3. The chipset has two Cortex A76 cores that go up to 2.20GHz and six Cortex A55 cores that go up to 2.0GHz. There's a two-core Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, and of course there's dual SIM dual 5G connectivity.

Xiaomi creates new Poco brand to take on Samsung, Huawei in premium smartphone market". South China Morning Post. 14 August 2018. There's an exciting design change at the front as well. The M3 Pro switches to a hole-punch cutout, making it look just that little bit more modern than the regular M3, which has a waterdrop cutout. The phone has a 6.5-inch LCD panel protected by Gorilla Glass 3, and this time, the refresh rate goes to 90Hz. But POCO's best-selling phones are in the M series, with the POCO M3 in particular turning out to be a standout success for the brand. The unique design combined with the gigantic 6000mAh battery and reliable hardware have made the M3 one of the best budget Android phones available today, and POCO is now looking to build on that success with the latest launch in the series, the POCO M3 Pro 5G. With MIUI 12, there are also some visual treats under storage settings with a tall cylinder in multicoloured discs telling you what exactly is taking up your storage space. System-wide sliders including calls, alarm, media, and others have also gained fluid animations. There is also an option to switch to the new Control centre which is inspired by iOS. When turned on, you will get an all-new Control centre that can be accessed by swiping down on the right side of the device. Swiping on the left will give you the notifications at a glance. With that in mind you have to expect some compromises, and this handset certainly has some: both the camera and the overall performance are adequate and not much more than that, so you're going to have to weigh up what's most important to you. It's also worth noting that apart from a few design flourishes, this is exactly the same phone as the Redmi Note 10 5G, also from Xiaomi. We don't pretend to fully understand Xiaomi's business and marketing strategies, but if you prefer the stylings of that particular handset and the current pricing suits, that's perhaps worth thinking about as an alternative to this. When jumping between apps, the screen adapts its refresh rate to the app at hand, greatly reducing power consumption without compromising the smooth experience. In terms of movie watching, streaming videos over the web at maximum brightness and a low volume eats up around 8% of the battery every hour, so you're looking at around 12-13 hours in total. Again, that's more than you can expect from a lot of phones, so it's something to put in the pluses column if you're considering this.

The M3 Pro features the same 48MP camera as the standard M3, and while it holds up pretty fine in daylight scenarios, low-light photos have a lot to be desired. If you want a budget phone that takes great photos in all conditions, you should take a look at the Redmi Note 10 series. For what you're paying, the Poco M3 Pro 5G comes with a set of specs that we can't really complain too much about: specifically, a MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G chipset, 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and 64GB or 128GB of storage (which you can expand via the microSD card slot). We've seen super-cheap phones try and get by on even lower specs, so it's good to see a handset that goes beyond the bare minimum.POCO hasn't changed things on the camera front. The M3 Pro offers the same 48MP camera as the standard M3, and you miss out on a wide-angle lens here as well. The phone has two 2MP modules — a macro and a portrait lens — and you won't get much usage out of these. When the screen is not in motion, it maintains a 50Hz refresh rate and automatically lowers the frequency to reduce power consumption.

In India, the device comes in two configurations - 64GB UFS2.1 storage and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage. Both variants feature 6GB LPDDR4X RAM. Additionally, you also get a dedicated microSD card slot which takes up to 512GB. Great Performance, Best-in-class efficiency MediaTek Dimensity 700 was built using a 7nm flagship-level process. In general we found the phone going well into two days of use (without much in the way of gaming or making demands from GPS), and if you're careful then you're only going to have to put this on charge every other night. There's also HDR (high dynamic range) and AI (artificial intelligence) options to auto-adjust exposure peaks and troughs and to boost a given image based on what the camera believes the subject is, which can go some way to enhancing the result (or sometimes go a bit haywire, but that's all part of the fun). In the case of the M3 Pro we've not had notification issues like with some Xiaomi phones, instead there's some instability with certain apps. On reapeat we would get crash notifications for Photos, for example, with a report card popping up. While playing South Park: Phone Destroyer a 'file not found' pop-up would appear - something we've never seen in years of playing the game.
