Overall, one of my highest recommendations for preteen/early teen reads and book 1 in my second-favourite series ever. <3 Jae Winter's review characterizes What Katy Did Next as "a travelogue written by someone who apparently hated traveling [...] England is too rainy, I don't remember the problem w/Paris but it was horrible, Italy is full of fever, and they come home early." It is my least favourite instalment in the series and this is I believe, partly due to the absence of the Carr Family. In this book Katy is offered a trip to Europe with her friend Mrs Ashe and her daughter Amy. This read very much reminded me of Amy's trip to Europe in Little Women. Elsie Carr: the third sister, an awkward child at the beginning of the book, too old to play with the 'babies' and too young to be included in Katy and Clover's games. She tries her hardest to join in, but is usually ignored. After Katy is injured Elsie proves very helpful and considerate, and she and Katy finally grow close. I particularly loved Katy's journey through story-book England. Katy had a penchant for visiting places she had read about in novels, one such being 'Wimpole Street'.

A wonderful, family story, with an inspiring introduction from Cathy Cassidy, author of The Chocolate Box Girls and other hugely popular fiction for young teens. So, now I've read the full series of Katy books. 1) What Katy Did 2) What Katy Did at School and now, finally 3) What Katy Did Next. In 2015, author Jacqueline Wilson wrote her novel Katy, which is a modern retelling of What Katy Did; in 2018, the Wilson novel was adapted into the CBBC TV series Katy. The August 2016 edition of Storytime featured a new illustrated adaptation with illustrations by Italian artist Marco Guadalupi. The book introduces a new character, a widow called Mrs. Ashe. Her nephew, Walter, has come to visit, but then he is discovered that to have scarlet fever. Mrs. Ashe does not want her only daughter Amy to get the disease, so she is sent to live with the Carrs. (What a considerate mother!) She and Katy, the eldest daughter, become good friends.

If Coolidge had just kept the story like that, it would have been a great book. But then Cousin Helen arrives and things start to go downhill. Helen was rendered an invalid in a carriage crash several years previously (we assume she's paralyzed from the waste down) but she is a saint, and she is always kind to everyone and has ABSOLUTELY NO FLAWS WHATSOEVER. Aunt Izzie: Papa's sister, an old-fashioned woman who raises the children after their mother dies. She is very particular and often scolds because she does not understand the children's ways, although she has a heart of gold. The What Katy Did books were among my favourite reads when I was in primary school (about 11 years old). I still have my original copies of these books and I recently decided to re-read them. I was delighted to discover that these books still filled me with as much joy and inspiration as they did when a read them as a girl. I'll concede that it's enjoyable for the first few chapters. Katy Carr is a tall, rambunctious tomboy who's constantly getting into "scrapes". Her prissy and dignified Aunt Izzy despairs of her wild, messy, nature, but her younger brothers and sisters all think she's the greatest thing ever. Katy is a writer and storyteller with zillions of great ideas, and she's the ringleader of the family, and Papa's favourite. Overall, this was a pleasant read. I was initially a bit ambivalent about this series because the first book really swung from a domestic adventure to Pollyanna-ish, but having followed Katy through a few years, it’s safe to say that she’s a lovely character and one that I would like to be friends with. That said, I still wonder who would read this – the first book is for children and this is for older readers, but it’s so unlike today’s YA that I’m struggling to think of who else would like it!Susan Coolidge (1835-1905) was born Sarah Chauncey Woolsey in Ohio, USA. She worked as a nurse during the American Civil War, after which she started to write. She is best known for her classic children's novel What Katy Did , which was modelled on her own family, and its four sequels: What Katy Did at School, What Katy Did Next, Clover and In the High Valley. The book is a typical 19th century morality tale, allied with the theme of personal growth. It needs to be read very much with the time it was written in mind. The language is chatty, cosy and overly bright. Also there are other aspects from a modern standpoint which jarr. Why is Katy confined to an upstairs room? True she has a wheelchair, but she is never able to go further than her bedroom window: Likened to Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, What Katy Did Next is a timeless classic for both children and adults to enjoy. What Katy Did is an 1872 children’s book written by Sarah Chauncey Woolsey under her pen name Susan Coolidge. It follows the adventures of a twelve-year-old American girl, Katy Carr, and her family who live in the fictional lakeside Ohio town of Burnet in the 1860s. Katy is a tall untidy tomboy, forever getting into scrapes but wishing to be beautiful and beloved. When a terrible accident makes her an invalid, her illness and four-year recovery gradually teach her to be as good and kind as she has always wanted.

Day after day she asked Papa with quivering lip: “Mayn’t I get up and go down stairs this morning?”” The Puffin Classics series is a perfect marriage of the old and the new. Enjoy some of the best books from the past and find out why and how they inspired some of the best writers of the present' - Julia Eccleshare, Lovereading4kids Read more Details What Katy Did bercerita ttg anak-anak keluarga Carr; Katy, Dorry, Johnnie, Phil, Clover dan Elsie plus tetangga mereka Cecy. Mereka jg kreatif, menciptakan Kikeri yaitu permainan hide and seek yg dilakukan dlm gelap. It is a curious fact, and makes life very interesting, that, generally speaking, none of us have any expectation that things are going to happen till the very moment when they do happen. We wake up some morning with no idea that a great happiness is at hand, and before night it has come, and all the world is changed for us; or we wake bright and cheerful, with never a guess that clouds of sorrow are lowering in our sky, to put all the sunshine out for a while, and before noon all is dark. Nothing whispers of either the joy or the grief. No instinct bids us to delay or to hasten the opening of the letter or telegram, or the lifting of the latch of the door at which stands the messenger of good or ill.” Yang jelas saya tidak puas dgn endingnya. Abrupt. Mendadak. Lho bagaimana kelanjutan Katy dgn si itu? Ini bersambung nggak sih? Apa buku saya yg halamannya terputus? This is the third in the series of books about the Carr family which began with “What Katy Did”. I felt that What Katy Did Next, was the weakest of the three, perhaps because it introduced concerns about which I was not interested, namely exclusively female chitchat, and a predictable romantic element. It was written in 1886, thirteen years after the second one, and intended for a more mature audience. Religious & Supernatural - 2 Incidents: Children imagine fairies in the woods and a sister makes up a story. A sister makes up a story with a wizard in it. A famous romantic trope unashamedly comes into play. Shallow, pretty girl versus generous plain cousin. I wonder if you can predict what will happen. Seriously though, Lilly lives to gain attention and Katy lives to give hers to others. Susan Coolidge has a fresh and endearing way of playing the pair of them off against each other. When Walter has recovered, Mrs. Ashe decides to invite Katy to be her travel companion on a vacation to Europe. lovable harum-scarum Katy Carr. Her head is full of schemes and one day she plans to do something important …

The style of writing is sadly dated, and it is doubtful whether many youngsters would enjoy this out of context although an explanation of the different times might help. I would definitely advise skipping the various poems included, which characters apparently wrote. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. I’ve always had a thing for going-abroad/traveling-Europe books and this book totally satisfied me. The lively Katy is now bedridden and suffering terrible pain and bitterness. Her room is dark, dreary, and cluttered with medicine bottles; when her siblings try to comfort her, she drives them away. However, a visit from Cousin Helen shows her that she must either learn to make the best of her situation or risk losing her family's love. Helen tells Katy that she is now a student in the "School of Pain" where she will learn lessons in patience, cheerfulness, hopefulness, neatness, and making the best of things. Well, this is mighty awkward. You all know of one of those books you adored as a child but reread as a feminist adult and see things from an entirely different perspective? What Katy Did was one of those books.

With Cousin Helen's help, Katy makes her room tidy and nice to visit and gradually all the children gravitate to it, coming in to see her whenever they can. She becomes the heart of the home, beloved by her family for her unfailing kindness and good cheer. After two years Aunt Izzie dies and Katy takes over the running of the household. At the end of four years, in a chapter called "At Last", she learns to walk again. It's kind of disappointing to see how people want to compare this book to other classics. I truly believe that evey book has something different to convey so it wouldn't be fair to dislike a book only because it doesn't come down to the level of other great books.
