Sir Nigel has been one of the country’s best known business figures of recent years, sitting on Government and industry advisory groups and winning numerous awards. But he grew up on a council estate in Newton Aycliffe until the age of 12 and has credited the education he received at the town’s Stephenson Way Primary School and Ferryhill Grammar School for setting him on the way to a PhD at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology before a career in business. He joined Legal & General in 2009 and became chief executive in 2012. Sir Nigel also worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Sir Nigel received a 1 st Class Honours Degree and an MA in Economics from the University of Essex.

This incident is a thinly veiled account of the famed Combat of the Thirty of March 1351, which is of importance in Breton history and in the annals of chivalry, as being an exemplary passage of arms. Sir Robert Knolles, who is held to have participated in the fictional jousts in Sir Nigel, was also one of the original thirty combatants. Nigel has successfully navigated significant geopolitical changes as well as challenges in the regulatory and market environments of each of our core businesses and has steered the Group into a position of strength from which it can continue developing on behalf of its shareholders, customers and people. He became Assistant Superintendent of the Carriage and Wagon Department of the L&YR in 1904 and a year later moved to the Great Northern Railway (GNR) as Carriage and Wagon Superintendent. He succeeded Henry A. Ivatt as CME of the GNR on 1 October 1911. At the 1923 Grouping, he was appointed CME of the newly formed LNER (the post had originally been offered to the ageing John G. Robinson; Robinson declined and suggested the much younger Gresley). This was the final paragraph of the first chapter of Sir Nigel. Written in 1905 as a prequel to 1891's The White Company, this book follows Nigel Loring as he meets his destiny. He really should have been born in olden days because by 1350 or so when our story begins, the era of knights-errant was coming slowly to a close. Nigel's grandmother told him all the grand tales of heroes from her times, so by the age of 22, he was burning to prove himself worthy of the old traditions as well as the still romantic ones of his day.
