Other gaming features include Game Optimiser, which is a hub for the TV’s various gaming settings. 4K/120Hz High Frame Rate (HFR) is available across all HDMI inputs, so you can plug however many consoles or PCs into any of the inputs. It isn’t yet confirmed whether LG’s OLEDs will support 4K/120Hz with Dolby Vision for gaming. It’s tonally balanced and consistent, too – where many TVs have a gap in the lower-midrange where the main drivers hand off to the subwoofer, the G1 is smooth and even, resulting in an unexpectedly natural richness to dialogue. It also doesn’t suffer from the flappy woofer problem of last year’s CX models when faced with extremely low bass, such as that in Blade Runner 2049. We uploaded the initial brightness measurements and uniformity photos for the Accelerated Longevity Test.

LG OLED65G1 Evo OLED TV review | What Hi-Fi?

The question of whether you should buy the G1 over the C1 will remain until we can test the latter, but the G1 takes the picture performance of last year’s GX and CX and improves upon it in almost every way without introducing any flaws. That makes it comfortably the best LG OLED that we’ve so far tested, and that is saying something.

LG has introduced a new Natural motion processing option for 2021 that does a good job of substantially reducing judder (one of the things consumers most complain about when it comes to OLED TV technology) without leaving the image looking so fluid that it starts to make movies look like soap operas. The Natural mode does, though, throw up some unwanted digital side effects that I personally find almost as distracting as a bit of judder. It's not easy to get the viewing angle right and our tests are tough. So tough, in fact, that no TV has yet managed the full five stars in 2021. As with any OLED TV, moreover, it’s also recommended that you treat it with care with respect to bright static image elements to avoid burn-in. For the vast, vast majority of people, this won't be a problem, though. LG’s OLEDs are some of the most gaming-friendly TVs available. They’re the official TVs for the Xbox Series X and will be getting Google Stadia support sometime in 2021. For VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) it supports the standard version, along with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium.

Though more work is clearly needed, we rather like the new home menu overall and miss the pop-up row of apps less than expected. LG should also be applauded for finally overhauling its settings menus. The rather ugly and convoluted menus of before have been replaced by a system with larger fonts, a less severe white-on-grey colour scheme and a far more logical layout, all without sacrificing opportunities for tweaking performance.

We've already lab tested and reviewed close to 100 TVs in 2021 - you can discover which we like best in our top five sets for 2021 It’s all very pretty… so long as you actually want to wall hang your TV. If not, you’ll have to pay extra for either a pair of desktop feet, or LG’s new Gallery Floorstand option. That's right: there's no stand in the box. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for four months in our Accelerated Longevity Test.

LG G1 OLED Evo (OLED55G1) review: Picture perfect | Trusted

For most people, though, little tweaking will be necessary. Dolby Vision content will by default activate the Dolby Vision Cinema Home preset and AI Brightness Setting, and that equates to a Dolby Vision IQ performance. It’s well worth leaving these settings as they are, as the performance is in line with our expectations of Dolby Vision, and the IQ element improves dark detail when viewing in a well-lit room without tampering with the performance under ideal conditions. For ultimate detail, in all environments, this LG OLED features Dolby Vision IQ. Dolby Vision IQ version uses data within the signal and light sensors inside the TV to adjust the picture quality for the best contrast. This improves the picture’s brightness, without ‘washing out’ the depth. You get a consistent picture quality, however light or dark your room is. Whether you’re watching a brightly lit sports event or moody movie, Dolby Vision IQ adjusts to suit. LG has also improved its already strong input lag appeal to gamers by getting input lag down to 12.4 and 9.4ms, depending on whether you’re using the Standard or new Boost input lag reduction options (the latter of which apparently aligns the lag-reducing mode with a game’s refresh rate). The third aspect of the UI redesign concerns the Menu system. It’s much simpler than before, divided into Picture, Sound, General (Settings) and Support. Helpful explanations are included for what each setting does, and it looks cleaner too. FeaturesFirst, the new AI Picture Pro option is a substantial advance over its predecessor. Its ability to apply more effective enhancements on a more local basis yields pictures which look both more eye-catching and more natural. This eye-catching/natural combination is key, since while LG AI processing has previously delivered enhancements to colour, sharpness and contrast, those enhancements have always been accompanied by distracting side effects. On the OLED G1 the improvements are not only more pronounced, but come at the expense of practically no downsides. Alexa also worked with the few requests I lobbed at her – and, conveniently, I could call her up without using the remote. Both OK Google and Alexa were a little tardy in their responses, though. Picture quality Since it’s at the heart of the LG G1’s appeal, let’s get straight into the nitty gritty of what apparently makes its new ‘evo’ panel so special. Using a huge database of over one million visual date points, AI Picture Pro uses deep-learning algorithms to recognise content, remove noise and optimise the picture. AI Sound Pro leans from more than 17 million audio data points, identifying voices, effects and frequencies. From here, it optimises the sound by genre, giving a more natural sound quality. FMM also supports auto-detection over HDMI or from a streaming app, so when it receives a FMM signal it will automatically pivot to the picture mode. As far as I can tell, there’s no content with the Filmmaker mode signal out there.
