Bosch es el protagonista de la principal serie de Michael Connelly, pero sus novelas no me gustan tanto como las de Haller. Es que yo soy muy fan de los thrillers legales.

A huge thank you goes out to Edelweiss, Little Brown and Company, Hachette Book Group, and Michael Connelly for the arc of this book which will be published on November 10, 2020. On the night of the celebration, he is pulled over by a police officer, who finds the body of his former client in the car’s trunk. Upon opening the car trunk and seeing a dead body, Haller is immediately charged with murder. So, his whole life is upside down! La Cosse, a shady character with connections to organized crime, was brutally killed and found in the trunk of Haller’s vehicle. Working with a co-counsel he knows well, Haller must prove his innocence to a panel of jurors who appear eager to hear what the state has to say. It’s sure to be a cutthroat trial where innocence will come second to the ability to spin tales. Haller has everything to lose as he finds himself in the hot seat, somewhere he’s not used to sitting.Michael Connelly, the unequivocal master of the police procedural, again proves himself the master of the legal thriller, too. Grisham and Turow might do it more often — but nobody does it better.” In conclusion, “The Law of Innocence” is a gripping legal thriller that explores themes of justice, family, and the lengths one will go to prove their innocence. Sam Scales, a con artist and former Haller client who pops up in three Haller novels, is the murder victim in this one.

I think Connelly created a near perfect plot around how an innocent person might end up arrested, charged, and prosecuted for a murder they didn’t commit. And using a criminal defense attorney like Haller as the victim of a miscarriage of justice made the story even more appealing. Haller sees the justice system from the perspective of the clients he has defended in the past and experiences the visceral feeling of facing the loss of his freedom. The corrosive effects of overstating the premise that innocent people get convicted of crimes and go to prison is people lose faith in the fairness of the criminal justice system. When that happens, we get district attorneys who stop prosecuting violent criminals in the name of “equity.” And when that happens, a violent offender who should have still been in jail for his last violent criminal episode gets a low bail and then gets in his vehicle in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Then he plows it into a crowd of innocent people watching a Christmas parade on Main Street, killing six and injuring many more.An easy five stars, and one of my favorite books this year — this book has heart, gravity and import. You will learn and feel as you read about the wrongful accusation against a character you know and love. It is also amazing, and equally compelling, how Connelly worked the pandemic into the plot. Highly recommended to both new readers and Connelly fans.

In his Haller novels, Connelly has always displayed great ability to write courtroom scenes, combining thrust-and-parry exchanges between defense and prosecution with a look at the personal motives driving all the players (including the judge). He does all that here, too, but the extended focus on the pretrial discovery process, with Bosch and investigator Cisco Wojciechowski doing the legwork while Haller sits in jail, gives the novel a double-barreled appeal. This is a fine legal thriller and a revealing character study, as we watch Haller lose a little bluster at the prospect of life behind bars” I like the way Connelly refers to current events in his novels, and naturally the outbreak of coronavirus features in this one. It interested me the way he wove that into the story. Connelly also touches on some other important issues that are still making headlines today—issues like the fairness of our judicial system as viewed through the “equity” lens, the law of innocence, and that innocent people sometimes get convicted for crimes they didn’t commit. It’s when the teetotaller leaves The Redwood that his troubles begin. A cop car appears from nowhere and pulls him over. The Lincoln car that Haller is driving has apparently lost its rear number plate. Oh, and what’s that dripping from the boot and onto the road? Could it be BLOOD? I had no illusions about my innocence. I knew it was something only I could know for sure. And I knew that it wasn’t a perfect shield against injustice. It was no guarantee of anything. The clouds were not going to open for some sort of divine light of intervention. Michael Connelly decided to become a writer after discovering the books of Raymond Chandler while attending the University of Florida. Once he decided on this direction he chose a major in journalism and a minor in creative writing — a curriculum in which one of his teachers was novelist Harry Crews.Como ya he reseñado en alguna ocasión el otro gran autor, desde mi punto de vista, de este tipo de novelas, es Steve Cavanagh y su protagonista Eddie Flynn. De éste, que yo sepa, sólo han traducido una. Connelly is best known for his long series of books featuring Hieronymus ‘Harry’ Bosch. Formerly a long-serving detective in LAPD, and more recently retired, and acting as a private investigator. Connelly went out of his way to ensure that Bosch aged in real time, and while that helped with the books’ sense of authenticity, it meant that he had to make hard decisions about when, and how, Bosch would step down from the police force. Esto, según parece, es una figura que no existe en los tribunales americanos de EE.UU. Tratará de encontrar al verdadero culpable por ser la única forma de ser exculpado sin ninguna duda. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival.
