I have been able to leave my drawings on my battlematts for 2 weeks and they came off with no problem. My understanding is that the imperfections are all of this kind of magnitude, but I can’t say that for certain.

Drew a 2 cm grid (I use 2 cm because that's roughly how big my tokens are- I use small white-blue-red poker chips) on it with permanent marker, preferably a different color from the whiteboard marker to be used later. My absolute favorite is to use a hex mat, as I prefer the type of facing that you get during gameplay with 3 hex faces for the front of a figure, two for the flanks, and one for the back. Bonus: this can double as a hard material in which you can wedge your extra character sheets in to keep them from crumpling down the edges. When I used them last I would put them in top-loading poster sleeves (similar to top-loading hard cases for cards). I have Stabilo OH projector pens at present, but generally only use the black ones due to this problem. I haven't had problems with any of the colors staining, but the longest I've had something drawn on it so far is 2 hours.

I'd taken to folding it a number of times for storage, but I discovered that it holds the creases, making it a little annoying when characters or monsters end their move near the creases. Mine is fine after a number of years of occasional use, but I know some people who got theres in 2002 and used it every night and had to replace it.The Chessex Battlemat is a “expanded” (i guess they mean stretched) vinyl mat with 1″ Squares on one side and 1′ Hexes on the reverse side. Likewise, a 2:1 or 1:1 light square grid fencing, or taught chain-link (which when taut and not sagging, is usually a square grid with odd corners) can make a good quick grid.

In my experience, they'll accumulate some marker residue no matter what, but dry erase + damp wipe is your best path to a long life. I don't own one of their two-sided mats, but I have friends who do, and the two-sided mats don't lay flat after being rolled up for storage. Yeah, I also read somewhere else that the vinyl in the older Battlemats holds its form better than in the newer ones.It is a joyful thing indeed to hold intimate converse with a man after one’s own heart, chatting without reserve about things of interest or the fleeting topics of the world; but such, alas, are few and far between. Boxed items are listed as "code/code" where the first code represents the box, and the second code describes the contents. I also use Staedtler Lumocolor wet erase pens, and a spray of Windex on the Chessex mat helps remove most of the stubborn black/blue/red remains. Once you have one page with the proper gridlines, photocopy as many as you need for your mat (I'd estimate somewhere around 15 or 20). MADE FROM EXPANDED VINYL - This Mat is reversible and has 1 inch squares on one side and 1 inch hexes on the other side.

Better to have a small permanent blemish on the edge of the mat than a permanent map drawn on the entirety of the mat! It lets you have at least a couple ready and a spare when they hare off and you have to draw one up In a hurry .It’s definitely a solid option and I think it fits most of your preferences, except you have to draw twrrain yourself. I like the flexibility and I use only wet-erase markers, so neither are a problem for me, but it's something a consumer should know going in. There are a few other never do things but it has been so long ago, I can't remember them but in general. My Chessex Battlemat (20+ years and going strong : those were *not* 'Made in China') is within reaching distance .
