Description

In conspicuously worn bodkins, the perforation above the eye may have been used for jewels and pearls (hence the name ‘jewel hole’). It is possible that this type of bodkin is that which one late-seventeenth century source describes as a ‘shaking bodkin’ [https://www.londonlives.org/browse.jsp?div=LMSMPS50006PS500060080]. As Beaudry (2009, 96) points out, such bodkins did not need a lacing eye. Beaudry (2009, 96), however, also comments that lacing bodkins could naturally serve temporarily as hair-needles, and may equally also have been ‘kept’ in the hair (under a cap) when not in use. Beaudry, M.C., 2009. ‘Bodkin Biographies’, in C. L. White (ed.), The Materiality of Individuality. Archaeological Studies of Individual Lives, Springer, New York, 95-108 In the context of this object, the term bodkin is used for needle-like implement/accessory with a flattened in profile. Its pointed end is balanced by a terminal, beneath which there is an eye, and sometimes a further perforation (Beaudry 2011, 6). The small perforation above the eye may have been used to suspend a jewel or pearl, or may have been used to thread a ‘keeping ribbon’ (Beaudry 2009, 96). Lacing or cord was probably threaded through the elongated eye. These are characteristically oblong, oval or shaped like tear-drops (Beaudry 2009, citing Sullivan 2004, 74-75: the tear-drop form is thought to be diagnostic of Dutch manufacture). The termini of bodkins may take a variety of shapes. Examples have been found with ear scoops (also called ear-spoons, one of the most common known subsets), hooks, and decorative finials. Beaudry (2009, 96) also mentions hands, pineapples and knobs. According to Beaudry (2009, 97, citing Dulley 1967, 228) the ear scoop was used for personal hygiene, but also ‘to gather ear wax for use on sewing thread, to keep the cut ends from unravelling’.

A typical mimikaki is about eight inches of bamboo with a small curved end and a puff of cotton on the other end. This cotton puff also cleans the outer ear and pulls ear wax out. Accurate & Stable 6-axis Gyroscope - The ear wax removal has 6 built-in gyroscopes to stabilize the picture. No matter how the camera is turned, the orientation of the screen does not change, which helps you get the precise location of earwax. It can recognize the direction more accurately, stabilize the picture, and provide a smoother experience compared with the 3-axis gyroscope. The curettes are 17 cm long to reach deep diseases. They also have slender shafts so you can see the working tips directly. Sessions, 1617: 1 and 2 May', in County of Middlesex. Calendar To the Sessions Records: New Series, Volume 4, 1616-18, ed. Beaudry (2006, 66-67) asserts that bodkins became shorter from the 17th to the 18th century. Surviving bodkin cases in museum collections, for example those made after circa 1755 in English porcelain given by Lady Charlotte Schreiber to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1885, appear to bear this out. A good number measure circa 13 cm, including the figural covers.
