It offers layers and an example of where the PX cask hasn’t dominated the distillate, which you rarely see nowadays. The majority of distillates (especially from new distilleries) are often brutalised by the host sherry wood. Resulting in a dram that is more sherry than whisky and samey across the industry. This bottling confirms the staunch robust nature of the Springbank distillate and on the nose it works extremely well. I don’t underestimate the privileged position I’m in when it comes to being able to get any expression of Springbank and at the RRP recommended by J & A Mitchell’s. In fact, it’s because of the nefarious practices of some retailers who were charging excessively over the RRP and who were subsequently deleted from getting allocations by Springbank that my local store gets the allocations they do.

Hazelburn is one of three styles of single malt made at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown. While the bulk of the distillery’s output is concentrated on producing the Springbank malt, 10% of its production time is dedicated to creating the heavily peated Longrow, and a further 10% to the triple-distilled Hazelburn. Hazelburn is the standard release of Springbank’s unpeated malt whisky line. It is triple distilled and as always, bottled without chill filtration or added coloring. Hazelburn is named after the Hazelburn Distillery which operated in Campbeltown from 1825 to 1925. At one point, they were the town’s largest producer of Scotch whisky. Tasting Notes I do also take a small bit of pleasure in winding up a few Scottish folk who ‘cannae get thur hawns’ on a bottle especially with my ill-gotten reputation of not actually liking anything from Springbank. A score of 3 out of 10 on a previous Springbank 15 will seemingly haunt me until the end of days, although I was only barred temporarily from the IAAS. Palate:Good mouthfeel paired with bright notes of vanilla and Crunchie bars. More lively fruit notes underneath.The finish is long and flavoursome, treacle toffee, peanuts and that signature Campbeltown salinity shows up. Year Old: The 18-year-old whisky is matured in specially selected casks to give it its salty, sweet nose, rich, fruity vanilla flavours, and gentle, spicy finish. A good waft of smoke and quite light character confused me – I guess I hadn’t realised how smokey this distillate could be…I guessed Kilkerran. My tasting notes:

Taste: Smoked and dry, mineralic, chalky, sharp citrus, lemon and grapefruit, oily and buttery, vanilla. Hos Springbank producerer man 3 distinkte typer whisky, som differentierer sig på en række parametre. Den klassiske Springbank har en let tørverøg. Røgniveauet angives (noget upræcist) med en måling af fenol i den færdigmaltede byg og ligger på cirka 10-15 ”parts per milion” (malten tørres 6 timer med tørverøg og 30 timer med varm luft). Springbank er desuden destilleret 2.5 gange. ”Longrow” – en kraftigt røget variant blev første gang lavet i 1973. Her er røgen oppe på 50-55 ppm, malten tørres 48 timer med tørverøg, og den er destilleret 2 gange. Den nyeste variant, Hazelburn, så dagens lys i 1997 da man for første gang forsøgte sig med helt urøget og tripeldestilleret whisky.
