In the case of this film, we learn—and in a conscious reversal of the mother-son dynamic that informed Psycho—that the baddie is a middle-aged woman stalking the camp that had once allowed her little son Jason to drown. No sooner has Camp Crystal Lake reopened for business then the killing spree begins again as the teens are picked off one by one.

Watch for an appearance by Crispin Glover and understand that this was never going to be "the final chapter" for Jason. A carefree summer becomes a deadly nightmare for another group of naïve counselors who choose to ignore Camp Crystal Lake’s gruesome legacy. The title itself is catchy and unsettling, priming audiences for arm-squeezing and chair-jumping, and the director cannily stuffed the last 10 minutes of Friday the 13th with enough gore and incident to disguise how little had actually happened in the hour and change that preceded them. Autographs are signed, stories are told, and the kinds of silly questions that only an obsessive can muster are patiently answered. There are a number of other endearingly strange extras that illustrate how aggressively this set is pitched at the fans.

The film has a soft, somewhat blurry appearance during many scenes and I'm not sure how much is due to the filmmakers and how much is the fault of this transfer. Unfortunately, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (** 1/2 out of *****) again takes a step backward with a plot that is both overly familiar and unnecessarily convoluted. This mythology is fine I suppose, but Part VII really drops the ball on creating any interesting supporting characters or suspense.But, Jason begins doing his job too well, and Freddy has trouble transitioning back into the real world. Every scar on Freddy's face and every smudge of dirt and debris on Jason's hockey mask is visible in startling clarity.
