Large corporations likewise having access to the datanet, together they represent the ruling class, leaving most common people either ignorant or subservient to what is happening in the upper echelons of economy and politics. The precipitating event in this case is Kate's abduction by government agents, who bring her to Tarnover for further questioning and to threaten Nick. He began his career as a prolific author of space operas – and then, in the 1960s, became something far more interesting.

Science fiction novel from 1975 prefigures WikiLeaks - resilience

As concerned with the relationship between individuals, society, and information technology as George Orwell was in Nineteen Eighty-four, Brunner captures much of the neuroticism and angst of living in the information age: Haflinger is anything but a man in control of himself. After 6 years and increasing doubts, Nickie made a grand escape, taking along some secret computer codes that gave him the ability to generate new identities in the 'use net'.We need an entirely different way of existing on this unique, imperiled planet—a way that many Indigenous people are still familiar with. They should be strictly forbidden because firearms are dangerous, students are most likely to suffer an accident and the security becomes less granted to those inside of a space dedicated to education. It is notable for its hero's use of computer cracking skills to escape pursuit in a dystopian future, and for the coining of the word "worm" to describe a program that propagates itself through a computer network.

The Shockwave Rider by John Brunner | Waterstones

Brunner explores the consequences of a society where individuals are constantly monitored and their personal data is weaponized. Then, breaking with his usual work routine, instead of outlining his plot, he filled 60 pages with thoughts before hammering out a first draft. Set in a not-too-distant future, The Shockwave Rider presents a society where government surveillance and information control have become deeply entrenched. These tracks are longer than the original released versions and show the aspect of the live mixdown that comes from using only hardware. The similarities and differences between money, class, and family values in the stories are much more significant because they have more affect on each story and on the reader. In the end, The Shockwave Rider is the character study of a man trying to preserve his independent sense of being in a United States splintered into social factions and a datanet through which real political and economic power flows. By the beginning of the story, the protagonist has already been captured by the Tarnover, and the investigators are putting his brain on regress mode so they can look into his memories before his capture, which we see as flashbacks. She is perceptive enough to penetrate Nick's adopted persona, deeply disturbing him even though she fascinates him. What people remember about The Shockwave Rider is that it predicts ubiquitous computing—in 1975—and some of the problems that come with it.

Any sort of link or text post is welcome as long as it is about printed / text / static SF material. There are fringes of people who resist and resort to 'tribalism', warring among themselves for no real reason. Shockwave Rider and Stand on Zanzibar are two seminal books of my youth and hold up much better than some of his contemporaries’ works. Strange religions flare up and die; unminded by the powers that be (PTB) as they serve to provide an outlet of frustration/anger not directed at the government.Invasion of privacy it is; unforgivable… Well, do you believe that justice shall not only be done but shall be seen to be done? The Shockwave Rider delves into the pervasive theme of surveillance and the dangers of information control. He posts a blog which acts as a healthy vent for not only his bibliophilia, but also his love of culture and travel: Speculiction. This time around, Nick has another plan, and rather than running and hiding, he and Kate spend a number of months travelling the country, aided by an "invisible college" of academics who are allies or former residents of Precipice. Other inaccuracies are sci-fi staples – guns that fire lightning bolts; deep-sea mining camps; a Moon base.

If you would like to comment on this story or anything else you have seen on BBC Culture, head over to our Facebook page or message us on Twitter .Or there are the identities he has taken: “lifestyle consultant, utopia designer, priest, data retrieval specialist”—that last is like being a systems analyst, but they didn’t have the name when the book was written. There is also an essay or introduction that Brunner wrote about PKD for one of his collections I assume. This is how I felt about Zelazny before I actually read some of his stuff and realized he's nothing like PKD (I heard from big fans of both recommending each author). With social commentary rampant, the setting and personality issues portrayed are drawing closer to reality each day, making The Shockwave Rider yet another important science fiction work from one of its lesser recognized practitioners. It also envisaged the emergence of computer viruses, something that early computer scientists dismissed as impossible.
