If you feel at home on Twitter, the girls' discussions on feminism may feel like conversations you've joined in with before.

It's a very strong first person and you are completely inside Evie's head, which can get pretty intense at times. There are a few feminist YA stories out at the moment, but this is the first I've read that actually talks about feminism and discusses how to be a feminist, and I think it really could be a game changer! Holly Bourne has written an intriguing and well-written YA novel that keeps you turning the pages and is a meaner Mean Girls of sorts.

I finally picked it up last night, needing something quick and contemporary to break up all the war-torn literary fiction I've been reading in a sad attempt to finish my Around the World in 80 Books Project in the next 15 days. I think I'm going to have to do a whole video on this book and my relationship to it because this book is just so, so important to me. Bournes writing style is completely gripping and the story flips between current events and looking back at how things were when she was very ill, before she was ‘normal’. It's so cute to use your 'superior' intellect to make another girl the butt of your 'feminist' joke. Embarrassingly, I kept rooting for Evie to work it out with one of the boy’s despite his shocking behaviour, which is an insight into my teenage unrequited loves and self-esteem.

With all the boys, the drama and the mental health issues, Evie had a lot to handle and I felt like I was right there with her. No matter what, Evie was strong, nice and she inspired to keep getting better, but also to keep doing better. She has a plan: not let anyone know she was the 'girl who went crazy', make friends, and maybe get a boyfriend? Lottie is better developed than Amber, who's a bit plain, but I really enjoyed the way the friendship between the three was developed and how the girls all had their own flaws. Evie’s fear of relapse and her burning desire to be “normal” drives the whole plot, of course, and what’s interesting is what Bourne does with that.Es ist sehr realitätsnah, dass Verliebtheit nicht immer auf Gegenliebe stößt und dass man manchmal aus falschen Gründen dem falschen Typen hinterherläuft. A word that perfectly encompasses this book is 'thought-provoking' - by challenging stigma and addressing topics that are sometimes avoided and brushed under the carpet, it really makes you think. The main trio is Evie, Lottie, a super smart girl who's life mostly consists of boys and feminism, and Amber. As someone who has periods, like half the population of the whole world, they shouldn't be hidden away and made a 'controversial' subject. The message of inclusion and understanding was torn to shreds by the little "feminist group" that the main character Evie and two of her friends created.
