Take a walk over your floorboards. Any rotten floorboards will need to be replaced – mark them up with some chalk, pen or pencil. If there any loose or squeaky boards – mark these too as you’ll need to screw these in too. Remember, this type of glue is water-based and is, therefore, not waterproof or resistant to moisture, even after it is properly cured. This means that the glue may lose its bond and come undone when wet. For this reason, water-based glue is not the best choice for gluing down your hardwood flooring. Timber floors contract and expand throughout the course of their life. These movements cause alternative floorboard sealants such as papier-mâché and in some cases also (especially over time) wood filler and silicon to become ineffective and lose their sealant value. DraughtEx will mimic the movement pattern of the timber and therefore remain in place retaining insulation. Assorted brands of wood filler could have different drying times. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to allow for enough drying time.

We’re going to have a look at the three recognised methods of oak floor fitting, firstly the glue down method. Read on to find out if this will be your favoured method when fitting your oak floor. Prepare Oak Floor Boards Now using a soft mallet, hit the strip of wood down into the gap to create a air and dust tight seal. This also makes it more durable , but you may find it doesn’t last as long as other methods. This is because wood filler doesn’t handle fluctuating temperatures as well as putty or wood. What You’ll Need This helps to reduce the friction between planks and silence small squeaks. To remove the remains of the lubricant, just use a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth. If it doesn’t help, then try spraying a dry silicone lubricant between the floorboards. After doing that, wipe off the excess lubricant with a damp cloth or paper towel. Tip 2: Fill the Gaps with Construction Adhesive Boards were not acclimatised: New flooring must be allowed to acclimatise to the space it is being laid in before being fixed. If not, boards will expand and contract once laid meaning they will rub together and creak when walked on. If this is your problem, boards are likely to be damaged and will need replacing with new (fully acclimatised) boards. We hope this article will assist you in not only selecting the best type of wood flooring for your requirements but should you choose to use hardwood flooring, we hope to have provided you with the insight to select the best glue for hardwood floors.

Putty can also have varying drying times, and some doesn’t fully dry at all. Some can take up to three days to dry, and it will still remain somewhat pliable. 4. Sand And Re-stain (For Wood Filler) The most common reason you hear the noise when you step on the floorboard is the loose boards. They are bouncy and moveable, which causes them to rub together or onto the floor joist, resulting in squeaky noise. There are several reasons why the board is loose, and before fixing this problem, you need to find out the cause of the noisy floorboard. You must get your substrate perfectly flat before you start any installation, which means that you need to sand down any high spots and fill in any low spots. A good guideline for leveling would be to avoid any more than 3/16 of an inch difference over a 10-foot diameter area. An additional advantage of Stopgap is that once it has been fitted the natural shadow of the gap itself will make it almost invisible to the eye ensuring that the natural finish of your floor is not in any way compromised. Papier Mâché This is the go-to out of all the wooden floor adhesives when installing hardwood flooring. Urethane glue has been formulated to be extremely flexible when dry. You will need to use it when installing a solid hardwood floor, or should you be installing a floor that needs to carry a lot of weight. In these situations, you will require more flexibility in the floor so that it is able to move when it is walked over.

If you are still not sure what the cause of the squeaky noises is after inspecting, you should not risk it and make the problem even worse. Therefore, you should seek help from professionals and experienced carpenters, who know what can be the cause of the problem. Secure with 12 x 50mm Fibre Cement Board Screws placed at a minimum of 12mm from the square edge and 5mm from the side of the joist. Ensure screws are placed a minimum distance of 25mm from the tongue and grove edge. The same thing happens when the wrong nails have been used to secure the flooring to the joists, this will also leave the floorboards loose and let them move around.
