Another epic book in the Outlander series. It's very long and took me weeks to read but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Mainly based in the 1770's in America where Jamie and Clare have joined the American continental army to fight the British for independence. The author describes the battle scenes very well and I had never considered a war could be fought with good manners and etiquette although I am sure this was not always the case.

That’s too bad. Did you like it less than ABOSAA? Or was it just sort of the cumulative effect of these last two books that has turned you off? His first collection, Uncle Time (1973) was one of the first to establish the serious use of Creole dialects in lyric poetry, winning the Commonwealth Prize for Poetry. There are many familiar pleasures in AN ECHO IN THE BONE. I was delighted to follow Claire’s further medical adventures (trained as a surgeon on her return visit to the 20th century, she reinvents ether, struggles against chauvinistic doctors, and blithely amputates and acupunctures her way through a shifting landscape of war and illness); hear the music of Gaelic again (usually I hate it when foreign phrases are thrown into English-language writing, but in your books it works); and once more admire the forcefulness and fearlessness of Claire and her daughter --- who, as always in your books, leave a long trail of stunned and flummoxed males in their wake. Lord John William Grey - Retired veteran of the Rising of 1745 and Seven Years' War. The former governor of Ardsmuir Prison. Jamie and Claire's long-time friend. Stepfather of William Ransom, brother to Harold Grey, Duke of Pardloe, and uncle to Benjamin, Henry, Adam, and Dorothea Grey. One personal pet peeve...In an interview about Echo, D.G. promised that she would reveal why Jamie could dream the future, how/why he saw Claire in the future, and resolve the Jamie GHOST from Outlander....where he stares up at Claire and Frank's room BEFORE Claire falls thru time. Nope. Not in this book.

Readers have been waiting with bated breath for the seventh volume in bestselling author Diana Gabaldon’s epic Outlander saga — a masterpiece of historical fiction featuring Jamie and Claire, from one of the genre’s most popular and beloved authors. Lt. Lord William Ransom - The 9th Earl of Ellsmere, stepson of Lord John Grey, and the illegitimate son of James Fraser and Geneva Dunsany. Cousin to the children of Hal Grey, Duke of Pardloe, as well as the children of Jenny and Ian Murray.I forget exactly where it happened, but her homophobia is really bugging me. I try to get past it with “nobody's perfect”. I was even getting upset with Gabaldon; then I read the Lord John books and saw that it is Claire not Diana. Ok, I can live with this. I have to say, Diana, that I had a little trouble keeping all the characters and subplots and relationships --- and dates! --- straight. There are complications and contradictions galore: A young English officer who is actually Jamie’s son and doesn’t know it. An English lord and secret agent who is in love with Jamie, but who at one point marries Claire. A man showing up in the 20th century who turns out to be Roger’s grandfather. (Thanks to your rich fan culture; I accessed an enlightening online timeline: http://web.me.com/mawaltz/Tursachan/timeline.pdf. I recommend it.) If you’re a fan of the OutlanderTV series but have never read the Outlander book series on which the Starz drama is faithfully based, you might have some questions about what comes next in the Outlander story. Right now, the TV show is just wrapping up its fifth season, which follows the plot of the fifth book in the series, The Fiery Cross. Outlander Season 6, on which the writers are already hard at work, will follow the plot of the sixth book in the series, titled A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Scroll down to that book’s section to find out more about the plot.
