Emulation on an Android device unfortunately does not have a one stop shop solution. Each emulated system will have its own app which is sometimes available via the Google Play Store and sometimes available only to be sideloaded. Additionally, each app will have its own setup, settings, and interface. Based on debloated and clean LineageOS 19.1 build, Android 12 for a smoother experience. GammaOS includes Google Services and Play Store. GammaOS Lite excludes Google apps and services for extra performance headroom.

In the hand, the RG405M feels lovely and offers a premium device feel, and as with the RG353M, it’s made from aluminum alloy, and it’s incredibly comfortable and smooth to hold. Build quality is superb and weighing in at around 250g, it’s portable whilst still feeling like a very premium product. The Anbernic RG405M is a great handheld game console. If you’re in the market for something sturdy and high quality that will be able to emulate a majority of your retro game library in a sleek and stylish form factor, then this device is a great choice. It feels high quality and premium and it looks great too. It’s the perfect travel companion, but also is great for playing games on the go wherever you are. If you feel like giving it a shot, along with emulation, you can also look into streaming games using Microsoft’s X Cloud and playing games on Gamepass, although some games may pose issues regarding wonky button mappings. Your mileage may vary a bit there. When first setting up the Skyline emulator, you will need a copy of the Prod.key and Title.key files (Google them and you should easily be able to find a source). Thus, with more demanding systems, performance will really depend on the game and how much time you’re willing to spend to tweak settings. For most games I tried, I’d say I had decent to bearable performance and I’d mostly be playing some Gamecube titles on the RG405M myself. Of course your preferences and needs might vary, and this device not being able to boot two different OSes like some other Anbernic devices might be a downer.

Another new aspect to this handheld is its curved sides. I wasn't sure how I initially felt about this design but didn’t mind it while I started using the device. It does rest better in the hands than a more rectangular device but opinions might vary.

v1.3.2) Fix issue with provisioning script for GammaOS, ensuring that the first boot inits everything before allowing setup. Slightly longer first boot, but no issues later.v1.3.2) Update controller configuration, now emulating an Xbox One S Wireless controller via bluetooth. Fixes compatibility with games such as COD, Diablo and Geforce Now.

v1.1) Update flashing scripts to use alternative flashing method to prevent issues with incompatible devices. Updated instructions. Only two color options and both are a bit underwhelming (the green-gray looks amazing, but those buttons are questionable at best. The RG405M is equipped with a Unisoc T618 2GHz CPU, a MaliG52 GPU, 4GB of RAM, a 4” IPS display with a resolution of 640 x 480, 4500mAh battery, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0. Its specs might not necessarily be mindblowing, but they will be able to emulate most games up to and including the PlayStation 2. That’s a huge library of content! However, as these retro handhelds get more powerful and can emulate newer systems, Android might be the way forward. I am personally in favour of Anbernic being more open to adopting Android as the Android ecosystem already has some compelling games, emulators and corresponding community support. With its characteristic attention to hardware quality, having a ready-made ecosystem like Android, Anbernic can cater to that market with a quality device and it’s on display with the RG405M. On Windows, ensure you install the Universal ADB Driver also, and then reboot your computer: https://github.com/K3V1991/ADB-and-FastbootPlusPlus
