Description

It has a rechargeable battery, e-Paper display, intuitive settings in many languages and weighted plastic chess pieces. The computer moves are indicated by unique circular LED lights - nearly invisible, when not flashing. Centaur was made to give everyone a good game. Whether you are a beginner or a strong player, whether you are a home player or a club player, Centaur will adjust to you as soon as you make your first move. Its smart algorithm will automatically adjust to your level and always gives you a challenging game that is both educative and great fun! It has a hint system and the option to set up any position. Other, more expensive, boards by DGT and I believe also boards by Millenium have chipped pieces. If you insist on easily setting up custom positions, it might be worthwhile investigating those.

Also when I get tired of being in the house it would be nice to be able to sit in the garden under the roof of the pergola in the fresh air. Having a DGT PI or maybe a Centaur board one can play against the computer and get used to real figures.

Electronic Chess from ChessBaron

No advanced chess computer knowledge is required. Just use the Centaur to play, learn, train, analyze and improve your skill level. To start with I REALLY like playing on it. The pieces have a nice feel and I have experienced no glitches except it didn’t seem to recognize enpassant when it came up in one of my games. I will have to ask DGT about that if it happens again. Other chess computers are made to play at the highest strength. They are impossible to beat. At lower levels they play unnatural and unhuman. They are simply no fun to play against. To start with I REALLY like playing on it. The pieces have a nice feel and I have experienced no glitches except it didn’t seem to recognize enpassant when it came up in one of my games. I will have to ask DGT about that if it happens again........ That advertisements said it learns in just one game but it crushed me for about the first 3 or 4 games and then started to even out. I won the last two.

A hint system, suggesting the top moves. (Note that using this skewers the adaptive difficulty; The more you use hints, the smaller the probability to win on your own, at least that's my experience.) I have also just bought the DGT Centaur. I have a collection of chess computers ranging in age and strength - nearly all attained via charity shops. Many other chess computers are designed to play at top strength, thereby failing to provide an optimal realistic experience at lower levels. That's where the Centaur is specifically made to excel. Whether you're a beginner, strong player, home or club player, Centaur will adjust to your level as you play. This means you'll always see a challenging game that is both educational and fun! The only thing that worries me is that it seems to be fragile. The board is very lightweight plastic with no bottom on the board leaving the lights and electronics fairly exposed. The bottom of the chess pieces have a thin foil coating under which you can see the electronics. They have no real protection. I feel like the board in particular would not survive even one small drop. I could be wrong but I am not going to experiment. LOL I ended up setting up the position using the physical pieces from their respective locations from the first step. However, because of the way Set-Up works on the Centaur it was a bit of an ordeal. Some have argued, with reason, for the money DGT are asking that the Centaur should have had more options. The option to enable/disable auto resign and offer draw would indeed have been a nice addition.

Centaur knows 3 fold repetition and fifty move rule but it does not offer a drawer outside of those rules. It does not offer to resign either.

There's no need for computer screens or tablets. Just start playing chess naturally with intelligent auto-sensing technology. Impressive looking weighted pieces and on board lighted display within the squares themselves engage you in a fully contained, highly-tactical chess play experience that you will enjoy for hours upon hours. I own one and had the pleasure of meeting with the CEO of DGT. He took me through the product, it’s features, and some of the engineering elements. As someone with quite a few chess computers, I was pleased to see a lot of improvements made. The board is thin and lightweight. Those cups underneath actually work as a sort of prism to help illuminate the board when moves are made. The extra queens is a nice touch. None of my electronic sets included those. Compared to my Grandmaster, the piece size slightly smaller but still satisfying to move. Adaptive intelligent Chess Computer automatically adjusts itself to your playing strenght. It gives you a fair chance to win, to learn and, most importantly to have fun!
