The F200 supports parking mode when installed with a hard wire cable. When the ignition is switched off, the loop recording stops and events are triggered either by motion detection or impact detection, with the G sensor set to be more sensitive when parked compared to when driving. When triggered, a clip is stored in a separate folder, recording 10 seconds before the trigger and 10 seconds after. The F200 also features Energy Saving Parking Recording which significantly reduces the current drain and puts the camera in sleep mode when it is idle. When an impact is detected, the camera wakes up and records footage for 20 seconds. This function means drivers can have peace of mind that the dash cam can will operate as efficiently as possible without significantly draining the vehicle battery. As we said in the intro, this is a fairly compact dash cam, at least by Thinkware’s standards. It takes up more windscreen real estate than any member of the Garmin Dash Cam range, but we think it’s still satisfyingly compact. The F200 copes reasonably well with contrast and reproduces colours relatively accurately. However, high compression produces lots of artefacts, which have a negative impact on detail. This makes it quite hard to make out distinguishing features in the footage, such as any writing on vans or number plates. Dash cam manufacturers should really focus more attention on this area of their products, because it significantly reduces the usefulness of their offering. Why buy the Thinkware F200? Wi-Fi connection mode will automatically disable if your dash cam’s connection with Wi-Fi does not last for more than 1 minute. You might think that Thinkware is lagging behind with its Full HD resolution when some manufacturers have been offering Super HD for a while, and even 4K in the case of the Nextbase 612GW. But the data rate and encoding algorithm also make a big difference. Unfortunately, the F200 uses a relatively low data rate for Full HD, so its video quality is only mediocre.If you want to record external events in complete darkness, the final option is the BCH-600IRW. This infrared camera is waterproof and has a larger array of LEDs. This model is aimed at vehicles that don’t have rear windows, and since it will be exposed to the elements, it’s robustly constructed. It also comes with a longer cable than the other options.
